Does anyone know how to grow sugar cane. Where would I get some to grow
sugar Cane
I've seen sugar cane for sale in the produce department of the supermarket.
I'm only guessing -- but if you laid a piece on it's side in a shallow pot of soil it might sprout.
Sugar cane is a grass.
If you know what bamboo looks like --- it has nodes along the length --- if you find a piece of sugar cane that has these same nodes, it should grow as I explained.
You might want to do some research before planting it. If it's anything like bamboo, it could be invasive.
I wonder if the sugar cane for sale in the supermarket has been treated to keep it from sprouting. Don't know, just wondering. Might be necessary to buy it from a natural market or farmer's market.
I have much to say on this subject, but this is not the place to air it! So, I'll keep it short...
I avoid sugar like the plague, and don't buy/consume anything containing HFCS or Corn Sugar.
If "Genetically Engineered" was listed on labels, I'd avoid that too!
Lots of how to grow cane sugar articles on the web. It only does well in the deep south however so I have never grown it. http://science-in-farming.library4farming.org/Part_6/Sugarcane-Culture.html http://www.gardenguides.com/79551-grow-sugar-cane.html http://www.ehow.com/how_4774108_grow-sugar-cane.html
Sugar producers ( the majorirty of domestic production is from sugar beets) are under stress due to a lowered demand for sugar and increasing imports. There is decreasing profit in growing cane or beets to the point where production costs exceed market value. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/sc032
I read your other thread also. Mexico is facing the same problem, lots of competition from sugar producing countries and a rapidly shrinking North American market. http://www1.american.edu/TED/mexico-sugar.htm http://www.fas.usda.gov/htp/sugar/2004/History%20of%20sugar%20dispute%20final.pdf
The combination of price supports and allocations have been used in the USA since the late 40's early 50's. Most other countries use them is some form. The idea is to 1. protect domestic production and 2. avoid huge surpluses and price dumping that puts the producers completely out business. Has nothing to do with conspiracies, increasing government control is right out there in the open.
If there is government control., then that is the reason for food shortages in the market. Its not overpopulation.
