Great photos and plants folks!
Does anyone have a Daylily flower recipe?
Here's more Hawaiian weeds.
This is Pterolepis glomerata.
Tropical Garden #91 - February 2011
Beautiful group of D.Ger's here and very nice plant pictures too.
Debra, sorry your area got blasted again with snow and mjs, you know I think Bop is a gorgeous horse too.
Lin, Arabians are my favorite breed of equine. Does your brother still raise them? I've mostly owned Arabians and have bred and raised a few foals in the past.
HollyAnnS, what do you use to fight Spidermites? I think I've tried just about everything available but am yet to find a total cure for being rid of them forever. I don't guess there is a "miracle" product out there though.
KayJones, that was a great idea on getting a thread going for Have/Want Tropicals. I'm sure more people will add as time goes along.
Dave, some of your weeds are others treasures.
My newest Hoya.
Now Rachel, You are supposed to tell us which Hoya that is !! LOL....
I have Daylilys that are evergreen and ones that go dormant that I've had for years. They really haven't spread that much, but that's probably because they are in one of the "beds out yonder" way down at the end of the front yard.
Here's one my sister's crosses from many years ago, I think the registered it, but I can't find the records from it. "Maid of Maitland"
One more "old timer" sometimes it get's a bit of a "caramel" cast to the edges,
I've got a few new ones I got last fall in a trade that are evergreen, and they should bloom this spring. I planted them in a different bed on the north side of the house and they have looked great all winter.
...wish they'd fix this so we could load multiple pics.
Wow keep them comming I am i the hospital and love to see all the beautiful flowers!!!!
Pensacola, I hope you are better soon, hope its nothing serious.
MJ, the thing with me is I am almost in town, only a mile to Walmart, but there are some woods that backs up to our property. I live in a small subdivision and it is nothing to look out the window and see the turkeys in everyones yard. I think once we move out to the country, I will have the deer problem.
Pen,
these are for you, make you feel better...
trying hard to impress his girlssss...
Rachel, I use a Neem Oil mix. I think it is pretty effective but I do still have issues more because I don't spray consistently. You should spray every two week until you no longer see signs of the mites which I don't do. I probably only spray every 6 weeks and it knocks back the SM but doesn't really get rid of them. The plants in the living room were treated with Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Control. They are looking better than those in the upstairs plant room but they also have more light and space. The ones upstairs are much more crowded. I bring my plants inside in the fall and they all stay in the livingroom until Christmas when I need the space for the tree and entertaining. Then anything that isn't too large to carry up or blooming goes into an upstairs room for storage until after Christmas that is when the SM get out of control. That room is pretty light with two windows and I keep the ceiling light/fan running all day but they really don't get the same care as they do when they are downstairs. I have brought some of them back down stairs after the holidays but not all of them. I just started using the Systemic that gets reapplied every 8 weeks and we will see how that does. I will say that my Bougie looks much better than it did last year as it is a SM magnet.
Neem Oil Mix
1 pint rubbing alcohol
1 pint very hot water
1 tblsp pure, cold-pressed neem oil
3-4 drops Murphy's oil soap (or any dish soap)
mjsponies and Gagirl, Love the wildlife shots. I also live out in the country and quite often see deer and have had a few fawns in the yard from time to time. We have turkey in the woods behind the house but I don't see them from the yard.
Thanks everyone thank god the hospital has wi-fi or Id be lost for sure.
James
LOL - let us know how you are doing and when you get home.
Sure will I dont know when that will be but hopefully not to long.......lol
There really are thousands of varieties of daylilies, every color, shape and size. Anybody been to Sample Gardens? A lady named Linda Sample has turned her daylily addiction into a business, i.e. she's now running a daylily nursery. She's trialed hundreds of daylilies to find the ones that work best in Florida. She has two gardens, one in Tampa and another up near Lakeland, (I think). They have a nice website at www.samplegardens.com
I'm going for a tour with my gardening group in April. Can't wait! Daylilies are so great - if you can get them established in the garden, they are so easy care.
This is a cool peachy one with lots of diamond dusting on the petals. It's in my daughter's garden in Salt Lake City but I've brought home a start to try here in Florida. It's a noid we got in a mixed bag . .
mjs, that Hoya is tagged as Hoya carnosa "Chelsea" and I enjoy seeing fawns too. Great pictures of wildlife from you and Paula. Paula, your last picture made me laugh.
HollyAnn, thank you for the Neem oil mix recipe. I will try it as well but like you, I am probably not consistent enough when treating for them. I've used Bonide All Season Oil and a "granule" systemic from Bayer. Both work well and keep spidermites at bay but neither products have proved to be a "forever" cure. I've read and have been told that once you get them, you will never be totally rid of them, and I believe it.
lil cuttie from Spathiphyllum 'Domino'.
James, so good to see you have access to us here, please get better soon.
Love those fawns, and the turkeys both. We have them here and we saw 20 deer in a field on the way home last night. Have no clue where they were going, since their regular hang out was bull dozed down for more houses. Bleah.
Love the hoya, Rachel , so pretty.
MJs, the a giagatia is vining new growth.
Here is the Black eyed susan vine mixed with three passion vines, I moved them and they are just going crazy.
They sure a a bright spot on a cold winter day. I think black Eyed Susan Vines look nice growing near Coleus.
Thanks Debra good thing I have a laptop.........lol
wonderful flower pctures...
bac to a dveng place... Bonare .. part of the A B C Islands... you drve around the island in your car.. and along sde of the road along the ocean you see stones painted white and numbered... these are dive sites... just bring your gear to the waters and go in.. each is discribed in the books.. as to what is there.. the wall / dropoffs are right off shore.. and there's the clearest water anywhere... book a room where they fill the tanks... the best ever... great for snorelers also... some iguana filled beaches... and old abandoned aloe plantatons..
The group that I dive with are going to Bonaire this year. Not sure if I will make this trip but I would love to go.
Debra, I love that black-eyed Susan vine, but I've tried starting them from seed with no luck.
Did you start from seed? Is there a trick?
The first vine was from a seller, a small start. the other two vines were from seeds from a DG'r here. I stuck them in the pot last spring and they popped up fast, grew in with the already established vine. I thought I was getting a blue plant for some reason. LOL
I think this is Irsine, I have kept it going all winter.
dyzz, I grow the Black Eyed Susan, both in the traditional Yellow/Gold with Black eye and the "African Sunset". Comes back for me now on it's own. You shouldn't have any problems with it growing where you are. Try nicking the seeds and soaking for an hour or so but typically they are easy from seed. I trying the White this year also.
Dyzzy,
I also have them, and mine came back this year also. Very easy to start from seed.
MJ, I planted the white a week ago and they are already about an inch high. There were only 6 seed in the pack and all 6 came up, now if I can keep them alive.
Here is mine 'Spanish Eyes" at the end of the summer...
Gee MJ, How cold did it get? It was only 30 here, I wouldn't have thought you would be as cold/or colder than us. Doesn't that make you mad? I went up to Lagrange this past week and saw several trees with buds on them and one that was breaking out in blooms along the way. I guess the plants are tired of the cold weather also and are ready to 'do their thing'.
Wow MJ that is terrible i hope it all comes back!!
