Please share your tips and experience with snow peas.
I planted some snow peas Monday the day before our record snow of 20 inches here in Claremore, OK.
The instructions said to plant them 2 inches apart. I put "recycled" wooden chopsticks next to the seed area in hopes it would help them reach the wire panels above to grow on.
Snow peas- share your experience
I planted mine Sunday, and yesterday tucked them back under the dirt, as the rain had brought some of them up to peek out at me. This is the first time I've planted them at the "proper" time, so we'll see how it goes. I usually have good luck with them until July or so, and then it's too hot for them (and me). I seem to lose them as the Okra starts to produce, so at least I don't suffer :) I have three different kinds of snow/sugar snap (there seems to be blurring of the definition) and did plant 2ish inches apart. I'll go back and fill in where they don't germinate, if I can remember what's where *G*. I have a fence for them to climb that starts about 10" off the ground, and put plastic "chicken wire" on the bottom so they could climb, like your chopsticks. Last year I didn't, and had to keep trying to wind them into the fence after they'd begun to sprawl. Hope this is better.
I think snow peas and snap peas are quite different.
I grow Oregon Giant snow peas. They produce in the spring and again in the fall.
Once they get 8 inches tall or so, I just give them a little (very slight) shove against the trellis.
Here's my pea growing page: http://www.growgreatvegetables.com/specificvegetablesthatgoinplantinggrowing/peas.html
Catmad- Good to know about the chicken wire.
Starwoodfarm - You tip site was fun. I was also looking at your info on squash, but didn't see the click below area for the varieties you thought were good.
I'm going to start going through my seeds since we are snowed in.
Let me know if there is anything you all are looking are trying to find in the way of seeds or plants.
"I think snow peas and snap peas are quite different."
I thought so, too :). Snow peas flat and basically pea free, sugar snaps little plump, round pods. Then, I tried to order some of each, and found them to be listed as, well, both. here's an example...

I still think of them as different, but had to adjust a bit to order. Part of my problem was that I wanted tall plants, not bush varieites.

Oops, sorry Darlindeb, here is the corrected squash page.

I wonder if somebody at Baker Creek is confused. At Johnny's, Sugar Ann is a snap pea: http://www.johnnyseeds.com/p-5622-sugar-ann.aspx
starwoodfarm- It looks like Zephyr is the squash you like. I don't know if this is something specific to my computer; however, the pictures are going across some of your print. The photos of the lettuce completely block the information about lettuce.
catmad - yupe, that was pretty much my definition of snow peas versus snap peas. Do you have a specific named variety you like to grow?
Do you do staggered plantings? Plant some two weeks now and two weeks later and so on?
Do you process any for later use? What technique and method do you use?
My little sugar snaps are sprouting. They are our favorite veg to grow and very expensive in the store if you can even find a decent quality product. My previous dachshund would pick the pods off by himself, chew the pods open and eat his fill. The new dog has to have me shell them for him.
I plan to sow another variety in about a week. I am going to try the new leafless variety next. They are best fresh and dipped into ranch dressing. Yummers!
darlindeb - what browser are you using? I know the site looks fine in Internet Explorer and Firefox, and I know it's a disaster on an Ipad.
Thank you for telling me of this situation.
Aquannie - It's funny how dogs will pick vegetables. Our Lab likes to pick tomatoes and peppers and eat them.
starwoodfarm - We have Windows Internet Explorer.
Have any of you tried planting morning glories with peas? I have those blue morning glories that volunteer and I was thinking about planting some peas along that fence line and some pink morning glories.
I have morning glories planted with the peas, but it's not intentional *G*. I have the MG everywhere that I disturb the grass and get light to the seeds, I think. As I was cleaning the pea trellis of last years residual MGs, my SO said"Oh, planting more Morning Glories, are you?" Ha ha. Humph. Fortunately, the peas sare done by the time the Morning Glories take over. I don't mind much, there are a variety of colors, and I don't need to "do" anything for them.
Aquannie, do you have the name of the leafless variety? Sounds interesting :) I don't have a favorite kind, but I've enjoyed all that I've grown. Not much luck with the Golden ones, but that may be just me. I think I'll have to replant all of them this time, the poor little peas are sitting in mud, or puddles.
I' haven't staggered planting, they seem to produce until it's too hot, so I don't think a second planting would make much difference. I might plant again in fall, this year.
Cat - Leafless ones are called Sugar Lace from Parks. Mine are just sprouted but I have all raised beds and they are well drained.
Darlin - pets will keep you company doing almost anything. I can't imagine living with out any. :-)
Thanks! I'll go a-wandering:)
Sugar snap peas were developed in the U.S. by crossing the Oriental snow peas and regular peas.
We are still covered with snow and more is expected tonight.
