What will burn up my credit card in 2011 - one word - - - - - -cats!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

cats? i have a friend at work who has spent more on her cats than i do on gardening - lots of surgeries - i asked if her husband knew how much and she said she does not share that information :)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

2010 was an expensive year for cats for me. Vet care is as expensive as people doctor care or almost. Unlike my garden, my cats are there all year around.

Thomaston, CT

Looking at roses last night.....may have to order some after this weather...don't know what will die off........I liked a climber called Cape Diamond, hardy to zone 3!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Vet care is WAY more than people care.

YES - to get their toenails cut is 10 bucks! Thats a dollar a wack

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

Roses, always roses.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Vet care may seem more expensive than human care because we're usually paying cash to the vet instead of using insurance, but human care is much more expensive than veterinary care.

Got my Rarefind catalogue today, going to make the final pre-spring list.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Uh uh. For normal check-ups and well care, my vet charges more than my doctor for an office visit - regardless of coverage. It's their cost. Asked my wife her office's office visit cost and it is also lower.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Maybe your vet overcharges and your wife undercharges! A couple of weeks ago I took Bugs to the ER for his eye infection and it was 179.00. A couple of years ago I took myself to the walk-in ER clinic (not in the hospital) for a scratched cornea and it was over $500.00. We both spent 15 minutes with the doctor and went home with eye drops. My vet charges 40 for the office visit, human is more and gyn is much more for annual visit.

Bugs is making it impossible to peruse the catalogue!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

ER's are always very expensive. I'm sure my vet charges more than $40.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Vet office visit = $48 here, and that's just the beginning. Our girls went for their rabies shots a couple weeks ago, plus one got a micro-chip and I got 3 months of flea/tick meds and the bill was $300.00. Between the two hospital visits for our poison-loving puppies and this bill, we're up to $3,000.00+ since September. :(

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow!!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

....or another "heavier" word that is not permissible here on DG!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

The year is early....... :(

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Bugsy will be getting the snip-snip soon. Hope that stays under $200.00. He might be using a "heavier" word after that bit of surgery ;)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Eros & Hope are getting snip snip soon as well... I think Eros is staying with us now... Randy said "she took too long to come get him.. we are keeping him"... with a few of those heavy words as well... I was kind of relieved he came out and said it first.. I don't really want to give him up anyway

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, really? Have you let her know?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

she has not even come to see him ... she has been back since December.... and they were doing work on her condo... so she said she didn't want to take him until they were done ... we text now and then and she has not even asked about him lately.. think the last time I sent her a photo was Christmas... I guess it just bugs me that I knew if he was mine... the second I had a chance... I would want to go see him... even if I couldn't bring him home.. she lives in Flemmington so it's not that far either

East Bridgewater, MA

My vote doesn't count, but I say "keep him" because he's part of the family now...I enjoyed the video of him (and Hope) playing in the snow; so cute!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I don't blame you and Randy for keeping him....how many more excuses can she make? Not to mention she missed the bonding period with him.....but you didn't. :)

Thomaston, CT

So true....I would keep him, definitely! When I adopted Suey, the shelter was 45 min. away.....I went to see her many times (couldn't take her until she was spayed)....but then I had to stop, because she refused to go back into her cage, & cried when I left her.....it was at least 2 more weeks before I could pick her up, but the second I could, I was there! And here she is....I just caught her in the spare room, on the bed!

My vet in Fairfield charges $60 for an office visit - $48 for a "short visit", the cat vet in Stamford charges $50 for an office call. The emergency vet charges $135. If I want to be "worked in" at the Fairfield Vet the office call is $110. The Stamford Cat vet has lots more hours - open Saturday afternoon and until 8pm every night so I go there most often now. I also like the vets even though I never know which one I am going to see. However I will probably keep taking the bengal (Wallingford) to the older vet at the Fairfield office as he behaves there and the Stamford vet thinks all my cats are sweethearts and Wallingford can be a pill - as you all have heard. Also that vet deals with a bengal breeder friend's cats so he has and extra edge on bengal health issues.

Thomaston, CT

Never thought of different cat breeds having different health problems, but different dogs breeds do, so it's good you found a vet that has that knowledge....

East Bridgewater, MA

Yeah, I think of different dog breeds having different disorders easily, but it takes me a few seconds to wrap my mind around different cat breeds having different issues.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Especially, the new hybrids.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Allison - I think you are very wise to keep Eros, because you have to question the quality of care and attention and love that he will receive with someone who has shown so little initiative or interest, as everyone else has said. You KNOW he will be very happy with you and your pups! I'd let her know sooner than later though. I think every breeder should have the right to reject a potential owner if the breeder feels that the home is not the right fit for the puppy.

Wowzer, Memory - those are sure Fairfield County prices! :)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

YAY for keeping Eros!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would really hate to break these two up besides... Jily & Lily don't want to play rough and tumble anymore.. and the two pups have a blast together

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ya, Hope would be heartbroken

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

where one is... the other is not far away

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Well, that settles it!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

not sure what got into Lily the last week.. been playing with them a lot & grooming them... where she was only doing either now and then.. has become multiple times a day now

South Hamilton, MA

Lily's nose out of joint now that the pups are older?
