In this area, paperwhites are sold as a holiday item for winter forcing. When I plant them in the garden, they just never come back. Have tried repotting them, or just placing them in pots atop pebbles. Sometimes those will sprout, but never bloom. Does anyone know the secret? I think I read somewhere once that these are native to South Africa. I crave that fresh, fresh fragrance.
Paperwhite bulbs-do I toss 'em?
I have read not to bother saving them, but can't remember why exactly. I'm curious now, maybe it has to do with the process of forcing, they don't get what they need to form the next bloom, unlike tulips or crocus that naturalize in the ground. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to let us know.
Yeah, I'm getting some rather weak looking blooms from the ones I forced. I'm thinking a scented room spray would have been a better investment! Maybe Dave's Gardeners should get together and order a bushel full of them wholesale. Not that I'm volunteering to organize such an event!
