I have planted seeds in a propogator at 10c, and they have all germinated and formed first leaves. At about 3/4" tall they mostly seem to fall flat. Can any body advise.
growing ganzanias from seed in a propogator in a greenhouse
There are several reasons and without a picture it is easier to give a few reasons,
1. The seedlings are either overcrowded and short of moisture at roots.
2. The seedlings are suffering from Damping Off, this is a fungus that attachés small overcrowded seedlings, the first sign is hairy grey looking growth on the surface of the soil and seedlings collapse.
3. The seedling need potting on into larger pots to allow the roots to grow and helm make strong healthy plants.
There is a product on the market in UK called Chess nut Powder, this diluted as directed and misted onto the very small seedlings helps prevent the decease called damping off.
You also need to look at ventilation of the propagator, I open the lid of mine most days to prevent a buildup of warm damp air which cools down overnight and settles on the foliage of the tender little seedlings, some days I remove the lid and pop it back on in the late afternoon before I close up the greenhouse for the night.
It is great you want to grow from seed and fun also, if your interested, go to the book store or local library and get out a book that will help you with propagation as there are lots of different methods depending on time of year, type of plant /shrub and also is cheaper way to fill your garden.
Good Luck. WeeNel.
Wee Nel, thanks for that, I'll try some more of the same seeds and pay attention to ventilation.I must say, brassica seedlings in the same propogator dont seem to be afflicted by wilt, so it's not all bad news.Regards,Pantglas
Im amazed that you got gazania seeds to germinate. Ive never been able to do so. Cam
Have now got some strong looking plants pricked out and more on the way.It was damping off that did for the originals.
