Not good for our sweet fern either. I can see broken pieces sticking in the snow.
What plants will be alive after all this snow melts?
My big white pines are shedding branches like crazy.....there was a ton of snow damage that hasn't come to light yet :(
Snow damage will be a giant boost to nurseries in a few months. Lots of stuff is getting crushed under shrinking snow pack. I trudged through knee deep snow to release the white birch trees when the temps were above freezing. They slip out easily enough when the snow is soft. The globe shaped Japanese yews in front of the house are partially crushed but I can't get to them yet.

Worried about my rhodos......
I'm just starting to have access to small parts of the yard. Not very happy about what I'm finding. Last year the snowfall was heavy and snapped mature 40 foot pines. This year I think it was the volume of snow followed by ice. The tall mature stuff is okay, the smaller stuff is suffering. DANG!
i would hope that everything will be ok in the spring - looking out my window here i see a large piece of a weeping spruce on the snow "near" the weeping spruce - looks like the deer may have gave it a taste and decided not to eat it - hope it is not from the leader!
The ice on top is worrying.
i am curious to see what the deer have left behind after the snow melts - i have created the super highway i was afraid of when i went out snow shoeing - lesson learned - they are doing a number out back and have even come up onto the driveway
Make another path going the other way and maybe they will follow it.
We have deer tracks all over the snow. Haven't even looked for damage yet.
Lots of deer here all winter. A family likes to sleep under my blue spruce.
Ah, yes, the homeless deer!
making coffee saw the herd on the other side of the wet lands laying down in the snow and resting - we i went to get the sunday paper i walked into the yard - they promptly took flight.
You guys have made me start to panic....I thought the snow would be a good thing, especially because of how cold it's been. I have many plants (hosta) in buried containers that I'm worried about now (drainage). And a couple dwarf conifers that are totally buried. And I never thought to worry about the hydragea buds, either. Gulp.
Nice soft snow is great. Packed snow and ice is not.
It was soft but now has a hard crust on it from the most recent storm that had rain. My dog figured out he can now walk on it , and I have to watch that he doesn't try to hop the fence which is now only a couple feet high to him.
I had similar thoughts when I saw one of the grey strays walking on the ice covered snow and heading towards the fence over which the Pit Bull lives. He turned away. Whew!
The snow still seems to be keeping the deer at bay. I know that the coyotes got one a couple weeks ago as DH heard them howl that Sunday when he went out early to scape frost off the car window.
Weeze, I'm glad you can get to part of your yard....still 3' of snow over mine, but no deer around since everything is buried!
Can't find my little Full Moon maple. hope it didn't snap under the weight of snow. It was hard to find and pricey! My White Tigress, Butterfly and others are well.
they will be find i am sure :) at least they are under snow and away from hungry deer.
Found a piece of my missing JM sticking up out of the ice/snow. Hope it's bent and not snapped. Marilyn, all I can say is "This too shall melt." Just not fast enough.
40s tomorrow--20s on Tues. Not happy about that one. then predicted warmer for the rest of the week.
Maybe 58 by Thursday here, but cold again next week!

I just have a Buddha head in a birdbath but it's missing. Maybe it will appear when we can see all of Jo Ann's chicken on the table.
Very nice placement - serene spot, Cat.
That looks very nice, Memory....I'm sure you have less snow than I do....
You should take a pic of the buddha appearing from the snow!
It felt so nice outside today. I imagine in three more months all the snow will finally be gone.
Maybe.
I hope it actually does last til May. I remember last year everything started coming up way early and I spent most of April freaking out that it would all get damaged by frosts. I think I'm going to be traveling in April for work and therefore won't be around to protect everything if that happens again...which will make me obsess over the forecast even more. So if the snow lasts and helps things stay asleep, I'm good with that.
Buddha is already completely out of the snow.
You guys should turn him on his back in the fall. That way, as the snow melts you see his belly first!
Cat's has a belly - mine only has a head, no body. Guess I got the half off version!
There must be over a foot of old snow in the open parts of the yard. I walked around today lifting white birch tree branches out of the snow. The butterfly bushes are FLAT stuck under the blanket.

Feel your pain Andy. My dwarf lilac out front is finally uncovered.......and totally mangled. The Scotch Broom bears a close resemblance to a pancake.
Wha, your Endless Summer blooms on both old and new wood, so you may have the new wood buds come summer. I hope so.
Great shot Pirl.
Hungry deer even ate my hellebores one year, nothing is totally safe from them if there is nothing to eat. Rabbits or voles have been chewing on some Narcissus which makes no sense, but just he leaves so they should be fine. Patti
They never eat castor bean!!!
Victor, Don't count on it. I was told they never, ever eat Hellebore. They ate about 6 of ours when they were young. Those hellebores have struggled to come back and after 2 years, they are still smaller than that day the deer munched them to the ground. I have grown Castor bean and some years it reseeds and some it doesn't. I like it and would be happy to have it in the deer allowed part of our property. Patti
