gmum - your garden looks as forlorn as mine.

Oh, that's depressing. It was so green and pretty last summer. Hope you guys thaw out up there sooner rather than later.

I ordered seeds tonight to start indoors. Grape tomatoes among them in your honor!

Great photo HB! Not much growing out in this weather!

Liza I was looking at okra in the supermarket this week and thought of you! I have still not tried it, but I will!

Made the most of the snow and made a "welcome" snowman for our Burns Supper:

gmum - what a great snowman all dressed-up in tartan. I see he's flying the Scottish flag and the Royal Standard, too. Can you translate the sign for us?

Here's a link about the Scottish Flags for those who might be interested:

Now there's a nice, cheery face for a winter's day!

Snow is so good for the soil as it's loaded with lots of good stuff! That's about the only thing it's good for, IMO! LOL

The sign says "Ceud Mile Failte" (cade meel-a fall-cha) which means "a hundred thousand welcomes" in Scottish Gaelic. And yup I have the St Andrew's cross and the Royal Standard, also known as the Lion Rampant.

Liked the wiki article, was going to look for one to post about how the Union Jack is made up (since it's all related) but it's there as well. I always think the Union Jack is such a great visual symbol of unity.

Had a fun Burns Supper with our American friends and even had them Ceilidh (kay-lee) dancing! There are good things about winter..... :-)

gmum - did you serve haggis? I'm joking, after all ,where would you find a sheep's stomach in PA (LOL)

Chester Springs, PA

Actually - yes! The sheep's stomach part and other bits were not included (don't even think all that stuff is legal here!). My Mum makes haggis with beef & lamb mince, oatmeal and herbs and spices, my gran made one like that too. To be honest I think that's what you get now if you order it in a nice restaurant back home anyway. It went down very well - everyone seemed to like it. She also makes a good veggie haggis with lentils and oatmeal and spices (I don't eat red meat) and it was very tasty, especially with a whisky sauce! :-)

gmum - My uncle (R.I.P.) lived in Renfrewshire and he once told me what went into haggis. I think your Mum's version sounds much more appetizing.

The veggie haggis sounds intriguing.

Here's my garden today, buried under 3" of sleet/ice and topped off with some snow.

stephanietx - I see something green peeking through there in the center, and what looks like onions off to the left.

I never think of Texas getting that cold! Bundle up :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It's garlic to the left and WEEDS in the center. I hope the cold weather kills them! LOL

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Nah! Nothing kills weeds. You gotta lug 'em out by hand!

Your garlic looks as though it is doing well, despite the cold weather. Mine is about 2" high. There are some gaps in the rows, which I'll fill in with some onion sets that will be here first week of March.

I've got a bumper crop of weeds out in the garden and we even mulched this year! I just don't get it!

Virginia Beach, VA

I hardly have weeds in my beds because we save our grass clippings and once the veggies are established I put thick mulch. The clippings has to be aged because if you put new clippings the heat from the decomposition will kill the plants. as far as flower beds it is lasagna gardening and topped with commercial mulch. We use total of 5-6 cubic ft of red mulch every year around spring. This are delivered and DH is nice enough to spread it himself as long as the weather is still cold for his everyday golf.If he is not able to do it then i hire someone to do it and he has to pay!! LOL!!!! It is organized and by early summer everything looks nice. Roses are fertilized and budding. .

If you are in the path of the terrible snow storm stay warm. We had been lucky, it is raining and the temp is 70 but will be in the 40's tomorrow. Take care and can not wait for spring. I might start some seedling--perhaps okra and grape tomatoes. bellie

It is 5-6 cubic yard not cubic feet of mulch. bellie

Wind takes weed seeds; there they blows
And where they land; there they grows!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think they've all landed in my garden! LOL

Lol. I like the wee rhyme.

Today we were covered in ice! Got some pretty pics so I will see if I can upload them later - can't believe the snow in Texas too! What a strange winter this has been (on both sides of the Atlantic, and a bad tropical season for Australia too).

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

The weather this winter has been so weird, I'm wondering what summer is going to throw at us!
