when to harvest

New Port Richey, FL

I planted cabbage in mid oct. from transplants in good ground. they grew great up until we started getting all these freezes. they're still growing and look healthy but the heads are only alittle bigger than a soft ball. they started heading mid nov. cooked one tonight and it was really good but not big enough for 3 cabbage lovers. if i leave them a while longer will they get bigger or bitter? i don't want to pick before they reach full size but i don't want them to get to old either. having the same problem with collards, turnips, and brussell sprouts. only things that don't seem to be slower than normal is onions and broccolli.

Cabbage is relatively easy. The heads became hard. If they give much when you press on them, they are still growing. I don't know about Florida, but brassicas here in Georgia slow to a crawl in December and January. Part of it is the cold temps, but much is due to the short daylight hours. You did not mention the variety, but there are several that don't get much larger than a softball.

thanks Farmerdill. The head was loose so i guess they're still growing. Not sure about the variety though. I'd like to set out a few more where I pulled the broccolli but, assuming they wouldn,t be ready till the end of march, and we,re usually in the 80's by mid march is it to late?

Cabbages will grow into June here. They do pretty well until triple digit temps in June. I grow early maturing varieties tranplanted in March.
I grow Quick Start, Tendergreen, Point One, Charleston Wakefield. This is Quick Start
