Feb. l4 keeps coming up for the people in Texas. Is this the start of the spring growing season? I have flower seeds, tomatoe seeds, sprouting inside. Is this the date to plant everything out or just certain veggies? I do know that everything bursts into a growth process but is it in Feb. or March?
Valentines Day
Hey beHillman,
Some of us Texans will be planting out our sprouted potatoes Feb 14. I, too, have tomato seedlings inside. I'll start hardening them off Valentine's week and begin Plant out on Feb 19.
I'll stagger the plant out each weekend, ending with March 19th for the tomatoes. Since I grow heirloom indeterminates, my growing window is very short, and planting later than March 15 or so won't bring my harvest in before I rip the plants in mid-June. After that they become a raggedy mess in the heat.
I have bell peppers started, and will put them out probably mid-March or early April. If it's not to their liking, they'll just sit there and sulk.
I'll start sweeties in April.
Gotta sow my eggplant seeds when I make Some space.
We're going down to the mid-20s for 4 mornings in a row later this week.

In my neck of the woods, we plant taters and onions on Valentine's Day. You can start radishes on 2/2, but with all this ice on the ground today, I don't think that's going to happen.
I'll post a report on how the 4 EBs of onions plants I set out on January 8, 2011 are faring in this weather...I covered them over with the heavy cardboard tent and sheets on the sides to block the wind. It was blustery last night!
Giant Alligator/Bulldog clips to the rescue!
