What's happening in your neck of the woods friends? Jan 2011

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Carol
Nice Stand! I love my lights, not quite as fancy as yours but still do the trick! I also have a small fan that I use to move the air around- indirectly of course- during the day.
You are a big tease with the daffodils! Will be looking for my snow to be gone next and with how much we have it's going to take a while.
Susan take care and sleep a lot!
M... If he's an athlete he will bounce back quickly, they have such drive that they do everything they can to move forward.
B.. You are busy as ever!

We have Clear Blue sky here along with a brisk wind and -17 so it looks good out there but a tad chilly when you go out!
Ann

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Yes, I suppose now I can sleep - I was afraid that if I slept during the day I would be awake all night and no use to anyone tomorrow! However, I think I'll be home tomorrow too......... so I can play with my sleep times all I need to!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I really would like to go out( gas, milk, some craft paint!) but that would mean shovelling all the snow off the car and although the main roads are probably fine I still think it would be better to stay home! So I will just do my usual afternoon activity- snuggled in the lazy boy with the TV on!

ANN now I have to go buy the bits and pieces I need for that stand. I do have timers and I have a fan ( although it would have to be across the room, pretty strong I think) but I need to get the trays for planting, (got the soil last fall) and I'm sure there are gadgets I will see that I want! Dont need to plant anything anytime soon of coure but do need to do some reading on how to do! And get into the shed and get the pots for the begonia tubers-not sure if I have any the right size!

Carol
I kind of have a wierd way of doing this. I bulk germinate the seedlings in one plain container then prick them out into root trainers so that my lights aren't being used for non germinating seeds. It does look like you have a lot of space so maybe you won't have to do this.
I have found that having the lights really close to the plants and having the air cool ( read basement) after germination kept my little ones in the best health. I found that with the air moving it created stronger stems.
I also hung a very reflective white plastic on the wall that the lights are against.(the grow op store had some good stuff or I use tin foil)
I use my heat mats for germination as they just pop right up and then I move the heat mats into the G house to assiste with root development when I move the plants out there.
Have fun!
Ann

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

hahahaha Ann - picturing your neighbours seeing you go into a grow op store LOL
today I had an avocado and have now hung the seed in water - Shades of the 60's, eh? LOL

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks Ann

Most of my garden friends who have this or similar units hang foil along the wall side.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Reading the above posts and chuckling away ..
The 'light garden' looks great Carol, good luck with it, as for your ;Daffies' .. one of mt VERY favourite flowers and you certainly have some lovely ones.

Betty, that strip will look so nice on a Xmas quilt .. but .. will 'do' the 'Spirit of the Northlands' one?

Susan ... sorry to hear your feeling unwell .. I 'think' I have fought off what was trying to attack me .. it was a head cold of some sort .. I guess the years of popping multitudinous amounts of vitamins may have paid off ?

We are BACK in the cold here .. -33C this morning, house is cracking, dogs are worried .. I love how the weather person says'we are dipping into the -30s folks, BUT, it'll be sunny' LoL Actually, in the sun .. out of the wind, it IS nice.

Bought a purdy buncha flowers on the weekend .. sure have perked up the house ^_^

Have a great day everyone !!

~M~

PS .. ME who knows zippety doo dah about football .. WON a football pool on Sunday !! Not for money .... I won a set of beer mugs (KAK .. hate beer) nice mugs though :-)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Marilyn - sounds like a "re-gift" in the making LOL
-33?!?!?! GACK!!!!!! Sunshine makes it better, IF you don't have to go out that is.
How's Lorna?
I pop lots of vitamins, too. Should have taken my vitamin C, eh? I take Flax for my knees, VitD, and Glucosamine Sulphate - good stuff for the old-in-body LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

Cold day here as well but nice for travelling in to work. You can sure shovel quickly when it's in the minus ..lol

Wish I had better luck with starting plants indoors but don't have the knack..seems I just take all my packages and sprinkle them and lo and behold they are gorgeous come summer..the other day in mypurging I found about 15 pkgs. of seeds, didn't see the expiration date but will just springkle them come spring and hope for the best.

Picked up lunch on my way in so will go to the Garden Gallery again to ohhh and ahhh..will go through the seed dept. and see what they have that is unusual and get a few packets...

Susan, glad you are doctoring yourself..Flax..my favorite garden flower..always love watching them sway in a light breeze, so dainty..

"M" I was looking a the bouquets in the store over the weekend and thought I should purchase a bundle but think I'll wait until I go fabric shopping and stop into the garden greenhouses enroute that sell very packages at a reasonable price..

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Flax Seed Oil capsules is what I take - really good for lubricating my poor old left knee lol

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I do that too Betty but some annuals need more time than we have out here. What I really want to do is strart the plants I usually buy for containers -I dont have many but it always seems to cost several hundred dollars so I figure the light garden will pay for itself in a couple of years.Unfortunately one of the plants I want to use this year I cannot buy seeds for but I can buy 'plugs' and bring them along under the lights so that will still be much cheaper I think..

Sun is shining and it is warming up, cleaned the snow off the car so will go off shipping in a few minutes.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Carol - do you know what Donna Dyson's DG name was?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Who is Donna Dyson?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

n/m Carol - I thought you might have known her.

She was Donna_11 on DG and was also on FB. She passed away yesterday after an illness. I heard she had asthma.
She lived in RI, US.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Another -33C day .. but .. from what I hear these days are going to be short lived. Better (seasonal) temps, plus some snow, will arrive on Friday .. can hardly wait !!

Tomorrow is 'LILLY'S birthday' .. she turns 4 !! Taking her to be groomed .. we hope, have been calling the groomer for the last week to check on the grooming time and keep getting a recording .. she's a pretty reliable young woman, I sure hope nothing has happened.

Susan .. sorry to hear of the passing of the DG member ..

Best finish my coffee and get a shuffle on .. Lorna has a blood work appt for 10 ..

Enjoy your day and keep warm everyone ^_^

Blizzard going on when I left home, light snow high winds..as I got closer to Barrie the snow had all but stopped, see it's falling ever so lightly right now! Had thought to go out for an outing Saturday or Sunday but see they are calling for much the same so, will be an inside play day, maybe I can find a playmate..lol

Happy birthday Lilly...having cake???

Usually when I make neck warmers I do them on my knitting machines, but rather bored at work so guess who is knitting. Cathy who often comes and does my walkways does so without payment, she also drops off to many seniors in the area and does theirs as well so I've decided to make her one and put deerhide on it so she's warm and toasty...

Watching the King's Speech on my computer here, great movie, no wonder it won so many awards...

AND they call this work!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Happy Birthday, Lilly!! Marilyn - hope you get in touch with the dog groomer!

Betty - I'd love to have that kind of work LOL

Last night I finished the gorilla I am making for the "Stuffed Toy" charity thingie I'm doing on the "other side" and it's sooooo cute. The kit (was opened by the previous owner) didn't have eyes or a nose, so my DH is going to get a kit hopefully tonight. Then, when the eyes and nose are on, I'll finish stuffing it and take a picture. Its so cute & cuddly, but it's all black so difficult to see clearly with all the black fluff. He's sitting, so looks like a fluffy ball LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sounds like a fun project to work on at home Susan but don't overdo..looking forward to the photo

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

I'm feeling ever so much better and will be going into work this afternoon (first, the morning shower!!)
must be the meds and coffee LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

Don't work too hard..

Paul just called, said white outs closer to home..as soon as Wayne is done with his client it's off we go..even 1 hours earlier than normal is good..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Hope your ride home was without incident Betty.
The wind was UP here yesterday and blowing across the fields and driting along the sides of the road .. it was just BITTER cold ... -28C this morning .. woo hoo .. better than -33C

Susan, the Gorilla sounds sweet .. what a great project !

Off early this morning to (hopefully) have Lilly groomed .. still no answer at the groomers .. certainly hope nothing has happened to her or someone in her family !

Have a good day all :-)

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

How did you make out at the groomers "M", all o.k.

This morning it was 'whiteout' time in the country....started out but lordy wasn't about to risk my life so back home I came, was glad I had switched the telephones to my house..stopped now, on duty until 4:45pm then out I go to shovel once again. Strange, talk to friend not more than 10 miles from here and it's clear sky for them..must be a streamer..

Played at 'sewing' today, been fun, got a lot accomplished, almost time to set it aside for the day and relax.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Lilly looks AWESOME :-)
Such a sweet dog .... have pics .. not downloaded/uploaded yet

My cousin passed away last evening ... very sad ... she was truly an angel on earth, such a wonderfully gentle woman ..
Her death was 'expected' .. but .. it's still hard to 'hear it'.

The fella living next to us is also very 'low' .. he is dying at home .. so .. have been sending meals over and trying to lend a shoulder .. Terry, not unlike my cousin Chrissy, has been unwell for a long time ..

So .. our COLD COLD COLD temps are about to go 'bye bye' .. sure hope that's true ..

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sorry to hear about your cousin "M" and of course your neighbor..when you see them suffer for so long you pray for them to be at peace. Still very difficult for sure..

Am sure your neighbors family are very appreciative...

Did you find out why the groomer wasn't answering her telephone??

Looking forward to the photo's

Wish I could say nice weather around the corner but calling for snow all weekend. Counting the weeks until spring!

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

"M" sorry to hear your sad news, my thoughts are with you.
Terry your neighbor has a wife Ann, right. How thoughtfull of you to help with food. Most likely the last thing she wants to do and I bet the shoulder feeds her spirit.

We too are headed for warmer weather. It almost smells like spring today and it sure is getting lighter earlier which is nice.
Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Thanks all for the condolences .. the neighbour and his wife, Carol, are in the midst of a HUGE home renovation .. their kitchen is gutted, no stove, just the fridge and microwave left, and they are in a den .. so .. not everyday, but a couple of times a week for the last 3 weeks, I'll cook extra chicken legs or pasta, nothing elaborate, and their ... hmmmm .. not sure what to call Freddy, he's sort of along the lines of a 'butler' I guess .. will come over and get it .. he's an ages old family friend of Carols and he lives in their guest house and helps with odd jobs etc around the house .. Terry is a paraplegic, has been ill off and on, but, this time his kidneys are involved.

Was up an outside with the dogs at 2am!! Piper 'heard' something .. sure enough, they did their duty, but, there were fresh tracks in the deep snow to the west of the compound .. not sure what it could be .. not a deer .. so am thinking fox or (gads) wolf .. could be a Lynx, or, maybe nothing as dramatic, perhaps a stray passing through.

It's VERY cold here .. somewhere in the high -30sC .. I don't even look anymore .. I KNOW how cold it is when I can't see out the back aluminum door window !!

Off to the bank today to revive a 'dormant account' .. was cleaning a bookshelf, and down behind a set of books was an old bank book!! So .. I took it in last week .. there is money (not much) in the account, but, I have to RE open the account to get it workable again .. will take half an hour or so of paper work .. this will be our 'VET ACCOUNT' .. be nice if it never had to be used !!!.

GURL coffee this aft with friends, Lorna is coming along as well .. she did amazingly well with her new leg yesterday .. it was fitted and is lighter and she feels like a million bucks .. YAHOO .. has even started walking with no walker .. just 2 canes .. am unsure if I want her doing that outside on the ice though.

Lilly had a lovely BDay ^_^
Am attaching a pic .. I'm crazy LoL

Ohhh look at Lilly, hope she left some cake for all of you.

Not a good morning here, although we've blue sky and a tease of sunshine but wouldn't you know it, I've been careless or shall we say 'stupid' .. 3rd time I've fallen down the back deck staircase, had already put icemelter on it then was in a hurry and fell..had I not had yesterday off for snowday I'd have stayed home..did some crying, not sure if because of the pain or because I'm just so careless..one of these days a broken bone for sure. I'll be pretty color again this weekend, thank goodness it's not where it shows otherwise someone would think I had a hubby or children that beats me up..

Then spoke to my son Greg, of course wanted sympathy..didn't get much, the 'I told you not to use that staircase USE the basement one'..ok..

Then there was a cancellation in Orilla so Melanie (DIL) is as we speak having her bladder fixed..she'll be off for 4 to 6 weeks..don't keep you long, if all goes well she'll be home tonight..

Then yesterday she got a call, her dad hadn't been feeling well so they rushed him into Midland hospital, did test and if he didn't have ganguerine (?) in his gallbladder so out it come but he's critical, on machines and not doing well..

So my little bo bo's are the least of a worry..

"M" glad Lorna is doing so well..she must be so careful with so much ice out there..enjoy your outing..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Jeeze Betty .. I sure do hope your Bo Bos don't make you suffer tomorrow, always seems to be the case ..

Good that Melanie is having her bladder surgery .. and NO .. patients are sent home 'Quicker and Sicker' now .. she should do ok as long as she follows the directions from the urologist .. first and foremost with that surgery is NO STRAINING .. as in heavy lifting or .. 'bearing down' ..
As for her Dad .. I sure do wish him all the best .. gangrenous gall bladders are not uncommon and the prognosis following surgey will hinge on how 'fit and well' he was before .. and .. whether or not the pancreas has become involved .. he is likely quite ill .. my thoughts are with you.

Terry (our neighbour) passed away this afternoon .. so .. that's 2 deaths in 2 days for me .. my cousin's funeral is Monday, but I do believe Terry will be having no service .. Carol is quite distraught .. have told her to give it day before making any definite decisions ..

Did make it for coffee .. LORDIE .. the parking lot was awful, was SO happy Lorna opted for her walker instead of canes ..
Her parents sent us some pics they took in September/10 .. one really nice one of Lorna and myself, will scan it a bit later .
Betty .. Lilly and Piper got the teeniest slice of cake each .. I always kind of worry about giving them lots of sweet stuff, altho, these cakes are NOT that sweet, they're iced with NutriWhip.

Best get supper on the go ..

Stay well all .. enjoy your weekend

Haven't been on the computer all day. Marilynne - I'm sorry to hear about your cousin.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

~M~ so sorry to hear about your cousin, and what an angel you are to help out your neighbours!

Here's a picture of the little gorilla I made. Now I have to sew a little banana for "her" to hold.
Then it's off to Doris' to have her donate them to the Police dept. They're going to have one in every cruiser so they can hand them out to children when they see 'em!

Thumbnail by Tallulah_B
Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning..Susan that gorilla is so adorable..am sure the child that receives it will be thrilled..who knows, police officer might keep him to ride along with him and not distribute it..lol

Dropped in on MIL who had the flu on my way home yesterday, thank goodness for Timmy's, was able to bring her coffee/donut and soup!
Then to my DIL's to see how she was doing..as I was driving over to their home I thought 'now that was stupid, go visit someone with the flu then right over to someone who just has had surgery' what was I thinking.

As I pulled in the drive saw Greg on his way to drive Kyle to work, offered to do so as Melanie might need him..handed him the flowers for Mel and said I'd not come in..he said he'd been feeling poorly and thought he might be coming down with the flu ..thank goodness he didn't start feeling that way after my visit or I'd have felt terrible.

Kyle said that the doctors "M" were keeping the grandfather almost in a coma..they draining tubes all over, he kind of though some of the bladder fluids had gone into his system so they were doing major draining, he's on breathing machine, guess because of them giving him so many drugs, helps keep him under..he's in fair shape so can only hope for the best.

Sorry about your neighbor, hard week for you!

Plans for this morning, breakfast at the community center for Winterfest Celebrations and then craft show at town hall. Darlene was suppose to drive in early this morning and go with me but they were calling for storm starting tonight and tomorrow but it seems as though it arrived early, snowing and blowing out there so not sure she'd come into town with the weather being as it is.

Off to wash floors then all housework done and I can play!

Gab later

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Susan .. what a sweet wee 'galrilla' LoL
The group I volunteer with here, VCARS, carry 'kit bags' full of pamphlets etc ,AND,a stuffed animal in each.
Had a HUGE donation of them from Tim Hortons .. 'Timmie Teddy's' .. as well .. Zellers has a Teddy named 'Zeddy' .. have ya ll confused now huh ?? WE give the Teddy Bears to any children we might encounter on a call .. goes over really well.

Good thinking on staying away from your DIL Betty .. sounds as though her Dad is going to have quite the fight on his hands .. my prayers are with him.

We have a lovely weekend ahead, weatherwise, above 0C temps .. shoveled a path to my stoop .. wasn't far .. and am hoping to wash sheets and hang them on the line ..
Other than that, it's a 'wait and see' weekend ..

Enjoy

~M~

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Timmy's Teddys, and Zeller's Zeddy's...... sounds right to me LOL I remember Zeddy.... also remember Pumpkin Head.... anyone else?

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Lawsie Susan .. Googled 'Pumpkin Head' !!! For heaven's sake, where have I been! Appears the beloved Teddies are PuNKINhead Teddies .. and PUMPKIN HEAD is some major bux HORROR movie ... whoooooooooooo .. wouldn't catch me watching one of those kinds a movies, anymore ... LoL .. I used to be a real Horror Movie fan .. after moving to the country, that stopped !!!

Have a pic of PUNKINHEAD :-)

HEY .. sheets are on the line .. in lovely sun and a cool east breeze .. only slight problem .. I had forgotten how high the snow in the yard was .. so .. the sheets are WAY over the line !!!

oooooops - well, I used to have pics of me taken with Santa Claus (7 yo) and I would get a colouring book given to me by PunkinHead - cute little teddy bear fella!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Don't I wish I still had mine !!!
In my saunter through the Google trail, I did notice that one particular PUNKIN HEAD Teddy is selling on eBay for OVER $2,000.
WHO knew !!!!

Mild day today .. damp tho .. and .. well .. we MIGHT get RAIN/freezing rain.
Think I'll stay put ..

Take care all

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning all...

Is this the spring thaw??? doubt it but with rain/freezing rain being forecasted I thought I'd better clear the snow of back shed, didn't think there was much but there was at least 2' so thank goodness that's done..shovelled pathway to the shed, to the variety store, back/front decks, main entrance and now I'm pooped...

But it was nice being outside in this milder weather, thought why not take down winter lights on front deck and the christmas tree, after all it's February so got that done...byebye Christmas..ooooh forgot the Christmas gifts I just bought in the car, put them on the bed for n ow, almost tempted to put name tags on them..I know, slap me silly for thinking Christmas but my nature..lol

Melanie did go see her dad yesterday afternoon, was only there 10 minutes and they had to leave, too much for him..he really is quite ill.

I had cooked a ham/turkey and the trimmings, cake and bread so h ad the kids over for supper and then Greg made a take home plate for Melanie, am sure after her thinking she was well enough to go to hospital she's thinking better of it this morning.

Should give her a call and see if she needs anything.

Now that I've got all the chores done outside and inside think I'll sit a bit..

Love the teddies...found a box of fur, 1 teddy almost done, 1 teddy cut ready to sew and fur for about 5 more..DG friend said she's take the box so I've once again purged...so many things in my home that could be used and I just keep them for the sake of keeping them, should be given away...box 1 done, now to continue purging.

Hope you all are having this mild weather..be safe if it starts the sleet and freezing rain..enjoy your day!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Warmed up and melting around here- that of course has the unfortunate effect of leaving ice all over the place!

Not doing a whole lot, getting back into the dog walk every morning habit ( weather helped with that one) spent some time yesterday at an agility trial with a friend who is just starting training and had never seen an actual trial, lots of familir faces - it has been about 2 years since we retired!

A little gathering this afternoon of the 'Fools' - a smallgardening group - we get together several times a year.

My appointment at the cancer clinic finally coming up on Wed, anxious to get on with whatever they recommend!

We have a new dog in rescue ( not with me though!) her name is Mia, she is almost 1 year old, thought to be a sheltie/BC cross, sweet girl a bit shy but warms up quickly. Think she will do well.

Thumbnail by fancyvan
Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

awww Mia looks so sweet/shy. I always like border collies..... had one once - it was a "chewer".
good luck on your appointment, Carol
have a good time with the "foolies", too!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Betty .. I am sure Melanie is so appreciative of the home cooked meal .. feel so bad for her re her Dad ...
I COULD have shoveled some snow today .. just to spread it around for easier melting, BUT, (always that but), we are to have some ikky weather ?sometime? soon .. so .. will leave it where it lays .. Piper LOVES diving into the snow anyway ..
Hopefully the roads will be OK for my cousins funeral tomorrow.

Carol .. Mia looks to be another sweetie ..
Hope you had a fun time at the gardening get together .. and best of luck for your appt the on 16th ..

Havin a BBQ tonight .. not that it is THAT nice, but, nice enough ^_^
