My Marble Queen is slowly dying

West Lafayette, IN

Please help! I have attached a picture. My plant keeps turning black at the steam. Not the steam the leaf is attached to, but the steam that connects to the roots. My plant used to be big and bushy and beautiful and now something changed. I haven't changed anything. I have tried cutting it back and I took it out and looked at its root but nothing looks unusual, unless I'm not looking at the right thing. Thank you for any advise anyone has!

Something to do with the soil - either overwatered, too much salt, or underwatered.

Hello Bethy......Marble Queen and the rest of the family are famous for having root problems and rot...mostly triggered by low winter light and over-watering....they respond in winter, in the house, to dryer conditions....I give mine just enough water to keep it from wilting,
keeping it on a windowsill with good light...it actually gets some sun for 2-3 hours a day....then outside into the shade it goes as soon
as the weather is warmer...your's may be too far gone...once rot sets into the base of the plant, it's almost certain to not survive....
try this....put the plant in the sink, water a few times with bottled water to leach any salt or chlorine from the soil...clip a few stalks to force new growth...then place the plant in a bright windowsill and don't water too much....you may be able to save it....Spring is coming. and with the daily increase in light, your plant may get the hint and keep trying.....it's worth a shot......good luck!!
