Trellises and obelisks of Northeast gardeners

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would check craigslist too - good ones will be heavy so many people would not want to ship.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I thought I would assemble one of the obelisks today as its 30+.
No obelisk assembly until March.
The unit is made of tube steel and comes in 3 sections.
The bottom ones have to be hammared into the ground where the piece will sit.
This also requires someone who can get down that far and has a level to be sure the whole thing sits straight.

I filled the bird feeders ,now what.
Painting is at a standstill.no mojo.

Spring can't come too soon.

Jack gave me this one for Christmas of 2009 and I've moved it a few times but haven't yet found the ideal spot.

I love that one...looks great where it is, Pirl. Jo, how's your knitting coming? That should keep you busy for awhile....that's my project for today!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is nice pirl

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I only knit at Holiday time and the caps and scarves go to a drug recovery house.

I'll give you my wish list!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I never get tired of looking at Arbors, trellises and obelisks. So many pretty ones pictured.
Pirl I have wanted one of those wooden obelisk for quite some time I just need to find one I really like and show it to Josh or Jamie and I'm sure they will build me one. I really like the one that Jack made for you and the clem is so pretty.
ge I love those SmithHawken trellises
Songsofjoy, Beautiful trellis with 'Rosa Konigskind' clematis
Really enjoyed the link to Moore Designs.
I know you all have seen our front Arbor that holds the trumpet vine. I took a pic the other day makes such a nice show in the winter as well as the summer.

Too bad SH went bust. They had some nice things.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

My lamppost bed has 3 trellises I found some inexpensive metal trellises that were too small and light weight. Ric built wooden frames for them that made them taller and stronger. We added the blue stained glass to them as well. I have clematis planted on each one. I needed a trellis for on the lamp post to hold the clem that is planted there but couldn't come up with something I liked. Ric came up with this simple addition to the lamp post. 4 thin pieces of wood with 3 cross pieces behind it to make a space. Very simple and easy but perfect for my lamppost.

That is a clever idea and it ties in with the pillar

HollyAnnS----

Yes, they have a wonderful architectural style, but they are especially suited for winter winds due to the slim profile that makes them almost wind-proof.

Very nice!

Thomaston, CT

Love the arbor, Holly....really frames the house nicely.....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Robindog, It brings us a lot of pleasure in the summer watching the Hummers coming and going from the Trumpet Vine planted on it.

HollyAnn - I saved all the photos you posted that you took at (I think) the Philadelphia flower show. I'm sure others would love to see the trellises and wood work.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Great trellises and obelisks, everyone. Holly, that lampost bed must be gorgeous in summer!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Love the lamp post bed, I really like the design.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Pirl - love that Christmas present!!! Anywhere you put it should be smashing!

Holly - those are lovely shots....like the winter look of the arbor, and the lamp post bed is very cool!

I love this thread! I'm getting some good ideas for the farm. Not here......I'd be afraid a wiggly thing would drop down on my head if I walked through an arbor. That happened to me once many years ago when I was canoeing down the Orange River - a very narrow, very tropical river. A water moccasin fell from the tree into the canoe....not a good scene, especially for my college suite-mate who was visiting at the time. She turned us over when she panicked. Not a good place to be in the river. I don't canoe here anymore.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Funny, Louise, the same thing happened to me while canoeing. I don't know what kind of snake it was and didn't want to find out! We didn't capsize though.

East Bridgewater, MA

Umm...even though I can catch snakes with my bare hands, and have since the age of 6 (non-poisonous here in the NE), I still get the "creepy-crawlies" when they are lurking within a 5-foot radius especially overhead !!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone,
Louise, That must have been scary, and really was very dangerous. I had a similar experience when I was a teenager but it was spiders that rained down on us felt like hundreds but probably just a couple of dozen.

We bought 4 more of those inexpensive trellises in a different pattern and Ric cut the legs off of them and we hung them next to the windows like you would put up shutters. The MG from the window boxes grow up them. He used spacers on them they sit off the wall about a quarter of an inch just enough for the vines to be able to wrap around.
Pirl I'll look for those pics from the Phila Show.

That is a really clever idea. I like the results.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I was thinking the same thing....love MG so it would be nice to put them in window boxes too!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

No set up like that here but I will think about altered trelisses for other places in my garden.
I had been looking at willow fencing to make a visual barrier for the leaf barrels and woodpile. I am thinking Trelisses hung from a branch might do the trick.
The spot where it will be isnt good for plants so a Planter full of climbers would solve the problem.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hanging a trellis won't be good for climbers, Jo Ann. On a windy day the vines would either rip from the ground or from the trellis. Try looking at examples of fencing online. Maybe you could find a section locally and get someone to mount it on posts to hide the view. The darker the fence the more it will disappear.

I need something to hide my air conditioning condenser outside and have been looking for the perfect piece of fencing but haven't found it.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have it covered but thanks.
Its a project in motion.
I may not grow anything on the trellises. I'll see when the snow goes just what my options are.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Years ago someone posted the most lovely air conditioner cover up I've ever seen. It was a small shed, looked like the really cute fancy sheds you see but much smaller and the back was out of it and the roof was only about 1/2 on the back. It sat in front of the compressor had mirrors for windows little window boxes planted and a stone gravel path to the door which sat just slightly ajar. There were plantings of hosta around it and really looked beautiful. Although it well hid the compressor it didn't enclose it so there was plenty of air space around it. It was so many years ago I'm not sure I could find the pic any more.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Sounds ingenious.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the idea, HollyAnn. I don't have that kind of room for such a good way to hide it.

I have to deal with the gas line here. It looks awful until June.

How about a piece of driftwood?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Or a bit pot filled with spring flowers, unless that would be too difficult to move.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

That was an April shot.
When the ligularias and columbine get a bit bigger the whole thing disappears.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I had a similar problem but it was in a dead corner (no sun at all) and I planted an Aucuba there. So far, so good. It does cover all the pipes.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, that clever Ric! I love those trellis shutters, Holly! That is so "copycat-able"!! :) You'll have to come to our farm to catch me though. lol
