Purple Finch
DAILY BIRD PICS VOL. 372
I love Flicker GG, wish they would come in my yard.
Sorry Burn, did not mean to cut in on your posting. This is the first year the Flickers have found my suet feeders. Yippee!
I am looking at your purple finch and trying to decide if I have had any at my feeders. I am still learning, and learning, and learning.
I find out, you NEVER stop learning.
Thanks for the new thread Pelle...I love that starting shot!
Thanks everyone for all the great photos you have been sharing on this thread. I have been bad and not doing much photography with this miserable weather. Hopefully it will warm up and I can head for the hills again. I can report though that tonight I had 5 Downys, 2 Hairys and 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers in the backyard. Very cool to see!! There is also a pair of Kestrels that appear throughout the day and scare all the birds. I have at least 200 Goldfinch eating me out of house and home!!
Hairy woodpecker on the feeder today. With our snowfall of 20" the feeder has been very busy. The day afterwards I kept seeing a grey squirrel disappear into the snow. He had to dig, but seeds easier to find than acorns I would guess.
Oh my gosh 200 Goldfinch? Bless you Rose!
Iris, Bless you too with all that snow!
I have not seen my Carolina Wrens, but I do here them at times. They are usually at my feeders this time of year. Maybe they come when I am at work.
Ha, they're probably watching for you to leave, sneaky little things. :o)

I have a question, if I sprinkle pepper in the mixed seed, will it hurt the birds, the squirrels are getting on the feeder more often. I don't think they can either knock it down or chew through the wire, but I am not sure. Any advice?
You know it's cold when the mallards are climbing on to pelicans to get out of the icy water.
Rose I've roughly a dozen goldies here but couple hundreds? Yay they would eat me out of the house and home as well. GG I'm glad to see you've success with attracting Flickers to the suet feeder.
Burn, I love that shot of your Mourning Dove, (I especially like that feeder). The Redpoll is really a handsome bird.
Schickenlady, Welcome, nice capture of the Owl. Red I would be concerned for my backyard birds' safety if that Owl were to hang around here.
Here is a Brown Thrasher, checking out the commotion by other feathered friends at nearby feeders.
This has been in a friends yard in FL for 2 days now. What is it and why 2 days, its huffing and puffing.

Looks like maybe an Eastern Screech Owl. I can't answer the why part. Maybe shelter or for food. Does it appear injured in anyway?

Elphaba, love that photo of the red-tailed. Cute yellow-orange variant finch and red-winged. I love that pine warbler-wish I could see one here.
Pelle great shots. Hope that hawk didn't find the downy. It's amazing how all the birds know when there's danger closeby. Love that white-throated photo.
Teddy, glad your patience worked.
Julie, love that photo of your thrasher-such a great pose.
Granny, love that look on your dee!lol You have a handsome flicker there too.
Lily, that lord is just gorgeous.
Burn, great pictures of the starlings, redpoll and finch.
Rose, can't believe you're feeding so many goldfinches. See any pine siskins there with them?
Schickenlady, that owl is beautiful. Sorry, I don't know the species.
Red, those shovelers sure fit their name.
I have a pair of Brown-headed Cowbirds here with the blackbirds. Here's a female.
We use suet packs with red pepper in them. that doesn't hurt the birds at all. I think that it would take a lot of the red pepper in seed in a feeder to discourage the squirrels but you can try.
Oh Duc, you've got the best pictures of the day! Robins are common down here, but I've never seen such large flock of them. Love all those berries eaters! Great shots!
On the feeder I have, there is a small tray which catches the seed, I wonder if I put pepper in that tray and the squirrels get a bit of it, do you think that would discourage them? I can sprinkle some in the tray and see I guess. They really are not hurting the feeder with that metal cage around it, I don't think they can chew through that metal, but I was just wondering.

Cayenne pepper will fire the squirrels up (and raccoons, and other animals with taste buds, too), but not bother your birds at all. I use it from time to time.

In about 30 licks I'm going to try, lol, to start the new thread. Maybe mother nature will be kind to me.

Duc...those are gorgeous shots...everyone of them! Those berry bushes sure show off your beautiful birds. To answer your question about the Pine Siskins...we have had several show up throughout the winter, but it has been over a month since I saw the last one. I am still watching for them and am hoping that a Redpoll will show up also. Everytime I see Burns my mouth starts to water!!
Lily and Red...love those shots with the water..almost looks warm there but I know it's not!
Today is above freezing and the birds aren't in such a feeding frenzy as they have been for the past few weeks. Here is a shot of some of the Goldfinches...as you can see they take over the feeders!
This was taken a few weeks ago of one of my beautiful female Bluebirds at the mealworm feeder. It is right outside my kitchen window and I can just open the window to fill the dish with fresh worms. It is a nice way to see the birds up close but we have to freeze when they arrive to eat or they will fly off. DH and I look really stupid frozen in mid-step waiting for the Blues to eat!! LOL!
That Goldfinch pic is amazing Rose and the female Bluebird is gorgeous!
Red, I thought it was noisy here with the robins, cedar waxwings and blackbirds, but I can't imagine what that huge amount of robins would sound like! Wow! Great shot of your woodie!!
Rose, love those goldfinches and Miss Bluebird is just beautiful!
This little Ruby-crowned Kinglet just loves the camera.
That's a pretty boy! Tiger, lol. Look at that pose, he stretches and balanced! What a pose! Nice! and what's a pleasure to see him up close.
