Retro stand needs a retro plant (advice pls)

Maryland Heights, MO

Hi everyone! I purchased this great bullet planter at an auction this weekend. I am in need of advice of what were typical house plants in the late 50's through mid 60's. I already have on planter with Mother In Law's tounge so I was thinking something different for this one. My home gets afternoon sun through one window the other side of the house gets indirect sun. Any advice is appreciated!

My other planter with Mother In Law's Tounge for reference...

My grandmother had a 'rubber tree' but I don't know the botanical name. Similar planter too.

illuminate1: Very nice planters! I think they'd look awesome as mixed container planters, with taller plants in the center, shorter plants a bit farther out and something like philodendron trailing over the edge! You'd just need to make sure the plants in each container are compatible, requiring the same type of care (amount of water, light etc.)

Popular houseplants of the 50's and 60's are some of the same ones that are still popular today:

Epipremnum aureum ("Devil's Ivy", "Golden Pothos"): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/51451/

Philodendron hederaceum ("Heart Leaf Philodendron"): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/736/

Ivies: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1637/

Asplenium nidus ("Birds Nest Fern"): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54387/

and of course the Saintpaulia ("African Violets"): http://www.avsa.org/Photographs.asp?Photos=O

Like your second planter with the tall Sansevieria ("Mother in Law's Tongue"), there's a another Sans that stays short and wide that would look great planted with that tall one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/162718/

Good luck with your awesome new planter and please share photo's when you have it all planted up!

shune: The "Rubber Tree" is Ficus elastica: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&expIds=17259,28155&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=ficus+elastica&cp=8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=hYIsTcKRBpP2tgPrwZjfBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CCwQsAQwAA&biw=1225&bih=696 which is still a popular house plant although they get quite large.

Thank you so much plantladylin! What a great idea! I was just waiting for the one to fill the bowl but I really LOVE the idea of mixing them!

I don't know how popular these plants happened to be in the 50's or 60's, but this is one of my current favorite combinations.

Alocasia "Polly"

Fluffy Ruffle Fern

Christmas Cactus

I've also got some Oxalis Triangularis in there, but they don't do so well inside under the shade of the other plants. You don't have to have the Bass on the mirror, but one of my housemates thought it looked cool - and I wasn't going to fight him, because I thought it was funny too. It's not there anymore though, the plastic thing that held it onto the mirror gave out and dropped it on the fern a couple times and that's when I told him to lose it if it was going to wreck my plant.

NICE combo PlantsforMyPots! I am really liking that! The fern looks really nice there with the other plants.
