Petunia

belfast, United Kingdom

Hi everyone

My name is Neill and I would like to know if anyone can tell me if there is a way of identifying
whether a petunia seedling is upright or trailing.

I have harvested the seeds from last years plants and they are in the propagator at present.

Last years petunias were mixed up as seedlings and I was unable to identify which were upright and
which were trailing.

Is there a way of identifying the two?

Many thanks

I can't imagine that they'd look different than each other at the seedling stage, you'll need to wait until they grow up a bit and you can see what the growth habit looks like. Keep in mind also that seedlings can easily get leggy and floppy if they're not getting enough light, so if you're starting these indoors you may need to wait until you've transplanted them outside and let them grow in a higher light situation for a while before you'll know for sure whether you've got any trailing ones or if they were just a bit floppy from insufficient light.

Thanks for your reply ecrane3

I was wanting to know if there is any way of telling the difference in trailing and upright before I plant them in baskets.

I thought there would be a way of telling the difference between the two at an early stage.

Well looks like I will just have to plant them in baskets and re-plant them when I know what they are (upright or trailing)

Thanks again

It all depends on how big you were going to let them get before you put them in baskets--you shouldn't have to wait all the way until they're full grown to be able to tell, but at the seedling stage I doubt you'd be able to accurately distinguish them. Since you know you have some of each type, just let them keep growing until they are at the stage of being small plants and it becomes clear to you which ones have the trailing habit and which don't, and then you can plant them in their final containers.
