2011 whatcha sowing this year ??

Cowden, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks for all the help on here! I just noticed my first sprout :0)
You'd think it was my firstborn the way I was so excited about it. lol

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

LoL what do you have that sprouted? I'm going to check my jugs right now.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Hope your jugs are OK . ...... lol

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

LoL the funniest thing happened. I went out to check my jugs and there was 1 missing! It was not out in th yard any place. My jugs are inside my fenced patio area. No one can see them. I came home one day and my gate was open. I know someone has been back there but I'm ot sure what they were looking for. Hopefully, I won't lose any more jugs!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

wow-- that is bizarre. hope it what ever it was, you have more seeds.

we have locks on our gates. having a treasured pooch, we never want to take any chances.

Cowden, IL(Zone 5a)

That is weird, you have a WS thief on the loose!
I thought it was kinda ironic my first sprout was in jug 1. I sowed 50 jugs at once so it wasn't out there longer or anything.
purple coneflower

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Ive got 50 jugs out,no sprouts yet..waiting ,got 10 flats under lights, coleus is up and pansies, violas, petunias and snapdragons, next is alyssum and Lobelia..

Arlington, MA(Zone 6a)

Mar 16 appearance, these things seeded Feb 13. all are fedco seeds

bok choy (2nd season)
various mild mustard greens (new)
Baby Bibb lettuce (2nd season)
blushed butter oaks lettuce (2nd season)

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I had some dianthius and coreopsis sprout, then we had a cold snap and they all died. I'm hoping there are some more seeds that hadn't sprouted yet. I had 3 purple bean vine up when it froze, have had one more up since then. My pop bottles seem to be doing better than my milk cartons. I currently have nothing up in them .... but not giving up.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

i dont expect to see any sprouts yet ,still pretty chilly here.. =(

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Tamara -- i think I'm up to 7 or so containers with seedlings... they are tiny - but they are up.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

No sprouts for me yet but I am waiting patiently

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I've got 14 containers out of 70.

but 5 are poppies,
2 or 3 Agastaches
2 Daisyes
Ruds and Dianthus

i think those are all earlier germinaters.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Maybe mine that haven't germinated yet still will. Crossing my fingers in hopes

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Terese Im thinking about moving my jugs up to the garden to get more sun, they are only getting a few hrs of sun, they need a bit more I think.Yes I was wondering what would pop 1st .petunias are popping under lights, hoping they do well.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Mine get warmer as they are western Exp [did i mention that yet] so from at least 1pm on, they are in blazing sun. closer to May, i have to put them in the shade or they dry out too fast.

Just a curious question. When the jugs are placed in the sun, don't the inside get too hot? Even in the winter, any closed space can get too hot.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Mine have not yet been "hot" - not really even that warm... honestly, we have not had many sunny warm days. we have cool [40s] and sun, or clouds and 50s ... like i mentioned above... i dont have to get mine out of direct sun until May... i put them in an area where they get about an hour of noon sun and have my kid water them daily when i;m gone.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I don't know what I am going to do with everything I sow. I had intended to put them in a new bed I'm going to make, but DH asked if we could put that off a while until we get some other things around here done. UGH!

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Crit, may I ask why he wants to put off the new bed? If it's because of building the beds, have you tried lasagna gardening? I made several beds like that last year. You can layer the beds and plant right away. Are you planning to make raised beds?

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

What is a lasagna bed?

It's because he wants me to get all the boxes out of the garage I haven't been through since we moved here in Dec '09. LOL It's a catch 22. I want shelving to put some of them on, and he can't do the shelving until I get the boxes out of the way. ^_^

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Lasagna gardening is a way of making beds without digging or tilling. I thought maybe your hubby was asking you to wait because it was so much work and time consuming. Here's a link http://ourgardengang.tripod.com/lasagna_gardening.htm

going to move my jugs up to the garden for more sun ,mine are on the east side of the hous e,and are shaded quickly.Garden gets alot more sun ,then Ill move them back down in May an start splitting an potting up. not hot enough to do dammage here either, july it would cook them ...LOL

Ive got sprouts Holly Hock and Persian daisies

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't have any sprouts!!!!! I'm so happy to hear about the sprouts everyone is getting but I want sprouts too! LoL

Huggergirl, you are so close that if you're getting sprouts, I should have some soon. Only delay, my jugs are on the north side of my house. So they may not be getting warmed too much.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I'd say that's it Anita.

I got home some this morning... it's one of my new Penstemons, but have to look up which one. all i know it's Jug#3

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

LoL I took your advice from last year and numbered myu jugs as well. In the heat of WSing I did neglect numbering a few but most are numbered. I tried three of the Penstemon this year - Husker Red, a purple and I think another red variety.

I can hardly wait. Have you all ever planted anything in an eavesment? I plan to this year. the workers are alway leaving their trash and piling branches behind my shed. I am the person who always has to clean it up. I have a bicket full of junk the utlityworkers have left behind. I thought I was being nice by killing off the grass to make digging easier for them so now I think I need to plant some flower to let them know that area is cared for and maintained and is not a dump site so their trash.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I would do it.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

moved them up to the garden ,Ill be seeing more sprouts soon..
diamond ,can you move them to the south or west,I would if you can.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

The south side is the front of my house and the west has another house within 10 ft and the east side is the side the entire neighborhood can see. they may not appreciate my jugs. LoL

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

I had to strategically place my jugs on my back deck so that the neighbors could'nt see them. I'd hate to get a nasty letter from the HOA. I can't wait till the trees leaf out to give the backyard more privacy. I've still got the annuals and vegetables to ws. I'm going to plant the growing poppies this weekend. Put down slug bait yesterday, so hopefully poppies will be safe from those slimy little mouths.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

My Hostas are always attacked by something hungry. I look for slugs and snails but I can never find them Is there another pests that eats Hostas? Rabbits?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

rabbits never bother my hostas - and i've had them nest over there a few times.

i know deer think its a free salad bar, do you have deer issues?

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Glad we dont have HOA to worry about out here ,although now everyone one who drives by can see my milk jugs setting in the garden, all 50 of them !!! They probly wonder whatt is she doing now.....LOL If they come to the door then they are hit with the lights from my in house greenhouse !!! 18 flats under lights.

Ive never had trouble with slugs eating my hostas ,I have an abundance of chipmunks, they eat them..Yea (the slugs)

We have a HOA, but no one would complain about it... though i am glad i dont live next to the Pres of the HOA. but mine are all in my back yard.. .though I have had them on the side of the house before - where everyone could see.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

its not really that bad ..anyway..and they are gone in a short time. I talk to pipi21 and she has an awful time trying to hide stuff ??? Geez that would be awful... mine are all line up neat an tidy wouldnt that count..tidy..LOL

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

It must be slugs or chipmunks. we have a huge problem with chipmunks around here. They are too cute to kill and there's no humane way to get rid of them.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

chipmunks eat slugs is what I was trying to say.. LOL ..cant remember what was eating my mil hostas,dh put sevin dust on them ,it stopped the munching .

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

I may have to try the Sevin. I have been dusting with the Diatomaceous Earth. It hasn't stopped them from eating my lovely hostas. I think I have seen Sevin at the Dollar Store. I better snatch it up. It never lasts until the last of the gardening season.
