Actually, they were going to fuse three vertebrates when he failed the blood test. Blood test showed kidney failure which was later determined caused due to dehydration.
One year later, two hospital stay, pace maker and now he cannot have back surgery. I actually think no back surgery is a good thing. Vern has always worked out 3 times a week and has always been slim and fit. The doctors says that why he feels no pain because he has such strong stomach muscles. Back brace is not needed. The symptom is he has drooping right foot and he is off balance which is caused from nerves being pinched by the back. The miracle is he has no pain. The back surgeon says he should be in constant pain.
If I had two of me instead of the two workers I had today, I would have gotten twice as much done but I do not know how to clone two younger Sharons. Tomorrow I have some clean up that they did not do correctly. And I have a bed to clean out that we did not get to but I can sit down and do that. And I will be directly in the sun getting an overdose of vitamins.
Linda, get moving girl. I worked today with the sound track of Jersey Boys and then Spanish guitar. I love Spanish Guitar.
I hope you all have a great day tomorrow. I will check in on a break. Katie, hoping you do not get the flood. Who is building the road? Evelyn, enjoy you day tomorrow because both of our weather is going to change. You will be colder because you are further North. JB, don't individuals that live in New Jersey go to Florida this time of year. Jnette, what does JB mean when she says she has a bundle block? Love you all, Sharon.,
Plant Propagation part XXVII based on my own experience
Sharon, would have to see how she used it. I couldn't find where she was discussing it. I know what a tech bundle is if that is what she is talking about, but would have to know what she was saying to tell you what she means by a block.
Any other kind of bundle I don't know. Would still have to know how she used it. Where is it? What day?
Also JB you asked about banana peels in brugs. LOL, I meant I would be experimenting. I put them in my roses and I know that roses and tomatoes and brugs all like a lot of the same things, so why not banana peel? It is potassium.
Oh yes, I have xanax and only take it in the a.m. and at bedtime. Unless I need it for a Panic attack. These attacks only came back since I was told I have the left bundle block.
I was fine until they started to want to do tests, etc. I am scared s***less. I had no idea I had anything like that, now they will not leave me alone. GRRRRRRRR
Jnette, this is what I was talking about. It is a heart thing and I think they call this block the widow maker.
Anyone want a bet on the Superbowl. I have a casino 4 miles from the house. I thing Greenbay currently is favored by 2.5 points....I think Vern is taking Pittsburgh but waiting for point to go to 3.5 in favor of Greenbay.
Jen and Sharon here is the link from the Mayo Clinic describing the Bundle Branch Block
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bundle-branch-block/DS00693/METHOD=print
I have none of the symptoms but I have over the years had high cholesterol (over 300) and borderline High Blood Pressure ( never more 200 ever. In fact If I am high it is 180/93 something like that).
These are the silent killers I guess because you usually just have a massive heart attack and boom, it is over. That sounds good to me. A lot cheaper than cancer.
Hope this helps your questions. JB
I'm happy to report that I am feeling better. Slept another fourteen hours or so last night. My ear is clearer which is wonderful. And I feel like I will feel more energetic soon. I am NOT pushing this but by next week may be able to plant my yacon crowns in the beds that Tony and I have prepared in the arroyo. Like Sharon, we have done lots of cleaning and clearing and sifting the rocks out for paths, leaving the soil and amending it with aged manure and seawed. I also have some barrels of mostly-fish compost that is ready to use. I can't use it where the dogs can get at it as they think it tastes good. But their fence is around the house and they are not allowed in the arroyo unless there is a jailbreak.
I am so glad to be feeling a bit better. Thank you all for your comments and concern. It helps to have friends pulling for you.
We don't have deer her. I have lived where they are a problem. Also have had gopher in other gardens. Here, we occasionally get a jack rabbit and they are huge. But they don't like the dogs so I don't see them often. I've been going through my seeds and testing lots of them. So far not much success. I think I will have hollyhocks and they are perrennial here and can easily be started from seed.
I have some small papayas on a couple of the trees which I started from seed. I also started my schotia tree from seed and it is now about thirty feet tall and producing seed which I send to the people who sold me the original seeds. A nice circle. That company is JLHudson.net and they have lots of interesting seeds. I like to read the catalog for information and entertainment as the owner is quite a character. Very outspoken in his opinions.
JB and other with snow - hope it warms up and stays warm for you, I remember long, snowy winters in MIchigan's Upper Penninsula. I am not nostalgic about them.
Think I will lie down again and let the antibiotics do their work while I put drops in my ears.
hugs, katie
Glad you are feeling better Katie. Keep taking care of yourself.
I just transplanted 5 Christmas (zygocactus) cactus stock plants into their larger pots. They will stay there for quite some time. They were not quite pot bound but they needed more space and I felt like doing it today before the next round of snow comes after lunch.
Getting ready to transplant some cuttings of Angel Wing (Cane like) Begonia. They will hopefully be ready to sell soon as the weather warms up.
Katy your beds sound good enough for me to lie in. LOL, aged manure and seaweed should be wonderful for almost anything. And the fish compost!! Now is that actual rotted fish? Or?? If so, I hope it is mixed with something like soil or something. I don't know how you would work with it if it were not diluted with something.
Well, I slept in this morning so guess I had better get busy. Must be something I could do today. Maybe get Bob to bring me up a bucket of potting soil and I would pot up a couple of brugs. Guess I will do that.
ttyal,
Good afternoon all: well we arepushing 70 today...itwas so nice I got out and put together a pvc cold frame forflatsI am planning on putting in ajuga.. I have to get more clamps to hold the end caps plastic on to keep the heat inside. I over built the thing but next year I will be able to build another one and have the one I did this year a 2' section shorter. of course i will construct them earlier in the season so I can have more controll on the plants.
high BP is fun but I don't recomend it to any one. I had my pain dr have a coniption fit when my bp was like 208 over 160 or something like that. Its all better now. they really freak out when I endulge the sweet tooth right before a blood test for colestoral. I think it was like 400 plus...but the sweet tooth has been put on serious limitations.
I don't know that I would go pokeing around the nerves with a nerve block (steroid). I only do them when its really bad. they do a selective nerve root block on me. its a 20 ft needle the size of a huge nail... (ok so its a bit smaller) but when they are getting ready to stick it in you it looks way to big. of course the fentenol/demerol anestesia helps a whole lot.
well its time to get moving again... have a great day
Dave
Hi Dave, glad you are up and about. 70 deg. would be like heaven. It is snowing here again.
I too have my BP under control. In fact the last few days it is like 114/70, nothing like being really relaxed. LOL I take Diavon for BP and that keeps mine really under control unless I go to the doctor then it goes up to 190 /90. That is all anxiety. I do not have any problems, pain or anything, just get very anxious and that makes me feel unsteady on my feet and I feel weak. Nothing like loosing breath or anything like that. In fact the thing that makes all this mess with me so stupid is that my last blood work was perfectly normal in every thing. It was a complete Blood Count. The EKG showed the Left Bundle Block Branch and that is why I was so surprised to know I had something like that. It was a result of the high BP and high cholesterol when my Mother was with me for 6 years and I nursed her and left myself go. No regrets. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I will do whatever I must to stay healthy now, but I will about it constantly. LOL See you tomorrow. JB
Hey JB, you go ahead, but take care of yourself while doing it. We want you around a very long time. We all kinda like ya, ahhhhhhh. :) :)
Lee
JB, I lovehaving someone else who tends to be as grumpy as I am.
Found orange blossoms in bud today. And it feels like spring.
I think the birds hang out here partly because I have lots of trees and shade cloth which give protection from the hawks and partly because they can pick at the rice in the dog food that the dogs don't finish. There are lots of birds for whatever reasons and they are singing a lot. I'm not singing but I'm feeling better. Got jumbo shrimp and ate about a pound of them. I'm stuffed.
hugs, katie
Well I don't know about that Lee, you know where our next cold blast is coming from? The Northeast!!! You know who lives in the Northeast? JB!!!
Now what did we do to her for her to send us that? Yeah we are going from a 38 low to 6 tomorrow night.
Well we do tell her to lighten up once in a while.
Dave, what did you do to deserve such nice weather? Did you get your coldframes put together? Ajuga???? Which one? I do have to say that plant covers the ground the best if that is what you are looking for. I love it if it doesn't go where I don't want it.
We couldn't think of anything for dinner tonight so settled on biscuits and gravy with some sausage links. Good for the old cholesterol and the diet. Oh well, better than the Polish sausage and sauerkraut that Bob wanted.
We cross posted Katie. Is that the Mexican Orange shrub or orange tree? I found the shrub finally and discovered it won't survive in my zone. I had one in Seattle and loved it.
I would put one in a container on the deck but Bob is not able to move them in in the fall anymore. My decks are on the same level as the ceiling of the basement. To give you an idea how he would have to move them to get them into the basement.
The shrimp sound good. Now it is getting really hard to find the wild shrimp here. Only farm raised and they don't have any flavor, I just won't buy them. but I found a bag of them in my freezer a while back. Must have gotten them when I didn't realize what they were. I am very careful now.
It's an orange tree.
kb
Bet it does smell good. Isn't it even early for you guys to have them blooming? Sure hope it doesn't ruin a crop.
Well Dave, your temps were better than ours. We hit 68 and it was absolutely beautiful. I had two gardening jobs on my mind list today but only one accomplished.
The reason being that I am a perfectionist when it comes to my soil and rocks. I do not like rocks in my soil. When the workers dug the holes for the large pots, they hid the rocks under the soil and mulch. They thought that would be fine. They did not know I would be re-raking and uncover all their hidden surprises. This is the first and last time I will have this twosome. The company will know Monday.
They earned their money because it was hard work but it took me 5 hours to get it right. BUT, 1 1/2 hours of those 5 hours were spent with neighbors that were either walking or driving by and stopped to chat.
JB and Lee, another storm coming your way later this week. Well we are headed down Sunday night and by Wednesday we will have a low of 29 and a high of 54. By Saturday we are suppose to be back up in the 60s. So, 54 degrees I can do if it is not windy. I have the bed at the end of the driveway nearest the house to clean out. The fig vine roots have taken over the bed. It is easy to remove, just have to do it.
Anyone want fig vine starts. I will probably have over 100. Also have pink rain lilies I have dug.
I also have many plants in large containers in the garage that need to be separated and potted.
It felt really good to sit down on the couch today at 4pm. I was tired but a good tired. I had Salsa and Chips for dinner. Vern had braised and slow cooked short ribs. I just wanted something cold. I have baby back pork ribs out for dinner tomorrow. Ribs, Black Eyed Peas, Salad and Garlic Bread. Vern will have Cornbread.
Vern's birthday is February 1. He will be 78. Then we are 10 years apart. In August we are back to 9 years difference. I cannot believe I will be 69.
JB, what I read, you are OK. Just stop worrying about it. That seems to be the worst thing you can do. Just take care of yourself. We need you.
Dave, I have some Ajuga. The plants are winter whipped but the roots are 5 years old. I pulled it back last year and it rebounded like Cassius Clay. It has a blue flower but I do not remember the color of the leaf. I could send you at least 20.
Th California Poppies are starting to germinate. I hope the freeze does not kill them. I dig up some of the pink rain Lilies and Australian violets and the reason for their looking bad is a very large tree root had moved into the area and was sucking it dry. It looks like it came from a street-scape tree and came in under the sidewalk.
Katie, I bet your compost tea is great. I hope you have a gas mask. Glad you are getting better.
I am also getting ready to dig the Black Bamboo. It is coming to you want it or not. And other things will be included without notice. Love you all
It is pretty bad when you have so much snow, there is no place to dump the excess...... LOL... Sharon. §§§§§§§§•••••••••••
This is Sarah Emily last night at her parents home for a 18th birthday party. Girl on left is best friend, boy on right is boyfriend. Sarah is 5' 10", so you can guess how tall he is. He and she are dual Valedictorians. They are both going to BYU. They graduate high school in June.
Jnette, Cross Post.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for motivating me over the weekend. It was pretty out yesterday, so hubby wanted to go on a road trip to a pipe shop he had read about on the net. He has recently started carving wood and sculpting clay smoking pipes. Some are really cool. He hasn't smoked for years, but he enjoys making the pipes. Then we went to Calabash, NC ( the seafood capital of the southeast) and had a wonderful seafood lunch. It was great. I didn't accomplish anything else yesterday, but it was a nice road trip.
Today our temps will be in the 60's so I am planning to get outside. I really need to cut back the dead stems of lantana and get some debris out of the planting beds. I wonder if lantana will root from dormant stems............. sounds like an experiment coming on! I really want to fill some flats and clean out the greenhouse. It is going to be in the high 40's tonight, so I may leave all the plants out in the fresh air. We will see how I feel after I move a few things.
JB, Please don't worry. I know that is easier said than done, but the stress and worry will make things worse.
Katie, glad you are feeling better. I would love to see some pictures of your plantings. They sound wonderful. I agree with Sharon though, I hope you have a gas mask for that compost tea. LOL
Evelyn, Thanks, I am feeling a lot better. Yes, I do get depressed when the pain is real bad. I don't know how Dave functions with the pain he is in.
Dave, I can relate to the size of those needles. Thankfully I have not had that done in a long time, but I still have nightmares about those.
Your cold frame sounds great. I have one of those little 20 dollar greenhouses from the dollar store, and I think I may use it for a cold frame. I really want to start some seeds this week while the weather is pretty.
We are hoping for rain tomorrow and wednesday, but then the rest of the week should be in the 50's.
Sharon, I will pass on the superbowl bet, but i would love to have some of your fig vine starts and a little start of the black bamboo. I will trade you something or send postage for it. I know the bamboo gets invasive, but I have an area that can fill in with no problem.
Jnette, Tell me about your brugs? I love them and had started amassing a large collection, but then something happened and I started losing them. It was as if something was eating the roots and they would just wither and die. Any ideas?
Lee, hope you aren't getting snow again. It does make the flowers bloom better, but ya know enough is enough.
Hope everyone has a great day. If I don't get going, I will not get anything done.
Sea ya.
Linda
Thanks for the hope of no snow, however, it came anyway. Is Cold, snowy and awful. Good day for watching TV, or quilting, and/or finishing up on rugs. ttyal, Lee
If you all came down here we could have a picnic on the beach. It is that gorgeous. My white brug has four open flowers and more buds waiting to follow.
I am feeling much better and am being careful not to overdo, as is my tendency after being sick for so long. I did the dishes and the laundry. Both the sink and the wringer washer are outside so it was not bad.
There's a lot of wokr to be done in my pplant room, mostly clean up. I may get down in the arroyo to admire what Tony got done while I was sick and to plant the yacon which is sprouting.
It is probably better to imangine my place than to see pictures. Tony and I are both serious "reusers" and I've been told that some people refer to my place as "Sanford and Son." I don't mind and have considered making a sign that says that. I've also been researching pink flamingoes - I especially like the ones with the wings that spin.
It's very quiet here and I'm enjoying the day. For those of you who still have snow and cold, remember that when you have your nice summer weather I'll be dealing with heat and humidity that makes me feel like I need gills to breath. So I enjoy this while I've got it. Yours will arrive soon.
hugs, katie
I forgot to say that it hardly ever freezes here. This time of year we have our fall/winter/spring season. Still lots of citrus on the trees and, at the same time, the new blossoms are starting to arrive.
kb
Cute picture Sharon, but who belongs to the feet behind? LOL, That's all you can see of that person.
Linda, I think the worst enemy of the brugs is spider mites and if you don't know what to look for you don't see them. Aphids are bigger and easy to spot, but not the SMs. And they can devastate a brug so fast.
Up here we like rocks in the flower beds. They heat up and keep the roots warm. I can see why you wouldn't want many. Now, in the container forum Al Tapla says the plants need something to anchor to so I add bark. They need chunks to grab hold of. I suppose, depending on the rocks, they might be good too.
My sister in Spokane has a very rocky garden and her produce is wonderful. And so much of it. But, you know, the same reason, the rocks keep the little feet of the plants warm. They have that lava type rock so very easy for the plants to grasp also. That might even be better than the bark in my containers huh?
Cold frames are good for holding plants over but they don't grow in them. It is too cold out. I found that out big time last year. I re-potted my tomatoes in gallon pots and didn't have room in the house for them so had to put them out on the deck in one of the 4 tier plastic covered/zippered units. They did ok except they just sat there waiting to get warm. But, for cold weather plants they would do ok I would think and, like I say, to hold them over.
However, your weather is in the 70s Dave, is that to stay, or will it go back cold again? I suppose in the 70s they would grow wouldn't they? Are you puting them where they will be in the sun? Then you would need a shade cloth?
No figs for me thanks, I am going to take a golden hops plant out so I can plant a climbing rose. The meter readers don't like the way the hops cover the meter. They can't see it. But, the meter is high enough I don't think a rose will go that high. The readers use binoculars to read it. They don't get out of their vehicles. I suppose they do that everywhere because of dogs out here in this area, lol, not just at my house.
Jnette, thanks for the info on the brugs. I may have to buy some rocks. ( we don't have them here. LOL we just have dirt clods). When I went to visit my sister in Shingle Springs years ago, my son was only about 5. She had made sure to have toys and things that would entertain my son and nephew ( her boys were grown at the time) and Shawn and my nephew played instead with rocks she had painted gold. LOL It was really cute. I told her they were rock deprived and I thought she would die laughing. ( it has been a long time since she lived at the beach.)
Katie, your place sounds wonderful. I love reusing stuff. You wouldn't believe the stuff hubby and I have reused most of it to the neighbor's dismay. LOL Some of it needs to be redone now, but as long as there is still life in something, I hate to just trash it. I wish more people would reuse things and it would help with the landfill problems.
I was outside emptying the greenhouse and decided to take a little break. I need to go get finished up, so I will chat later.
Have a good aftrnoon.
Linda
I should have extended the break! I had some help emptying it and then I fed everything some 1/4 strength plant starter and decided while i had help, I would put everything back in. Not a good idea. I went in to hang a basket and as I was walking back out, I took a fall. ( My gh is about 12" off the ground.) My ankle went 1 way and my body another and somehow I managed to either break or sprain my left ankle and the top of my right foot! I haven't gone to the Dr yet, I am sitting with ice packs on both feet, so I can tell when the swelling recedes how injured it really is. but at this point I am not sure I want to know if it is broken. I can't bear any weight on either feet right now and I am thankful I didn't hurt anything else. I had a pair of crutches from a break I had a few years ago, so my son flew in the house to get those for me and DH and DS and DS's friend helped me in the house. i cannot believe i did that. you would think by now that I would have learned to walk. It is rough being a klutz!
Oh well, till the ibuprofen kicks in you guys are stuck with me! 1 of my orchid cacti has 4 buds on it now and 1 of my avocado seedlings is about to bloom too. I was having such a good day out there. ( said in the whiniest voice I can muster).
I will check back in in a bit.
sea ya
Good grief Linda, you aren't old enough yet. When you age you learn that you have to watch every step you take. There might be a cat or something running underneath, or a 12" difference from the greenhouse.
Don't buy rocks Linda. Get the compressed coir bricks that are bark chips. Not the real fine stuff. They come in like about 15" square by 5 inches thick or something and make at least a 5 gallon bucket and probably more. I don't remember exactly. But just mix in a couple of scoops in a couple gallon potting soiless mix when you plant the larger plants. Like brugs or others.
However, if you do this, tear the bricks apart as you go. Don't just put the brick in a 5 gallon bucket and fill with water like I did. LOL, the outer parts of the brick soaked up and got so tight in the bucket it couldn't move so I couldn't get it in or out and the center of the brick couldn't take on any more water it was wedged so tightly in the bucket. Duh!!
Sure do hope your foot or ankle isn't broken. Be sure to switch off and on with ice and heating pad 20 minutes each. Bob sprained his arm (wrist) and he did that constantly for almost a week and it is fine now.
Oh No Ibartoo. I hope you have some good pain killers. So sorry you are a clutz. lol I mean sorry you had an accident. One time I did something weird like that while watering over the side of my porch. I kept walking and thought I had more porch and just walked right off the porch and fell with my foot twisted in some unnatural position. took 3 or 4 years to stop having issues with it starting to swell and hurt all over periodically.
Hope you are feeling better.
JB I would be terrified too. Just breath and pretend you are not the patient. Pretend all that they tell you does not involve you, just so you don't trigger anymore issues in a fear mode. It is not impossible but is probably really hard to do. It would have to be like an outer body experience.
Shar you sound so busy. I got no gardening done this week. It is kind of windy and cold today, and rained a little, all of a sudden. It was all warm yesterday but I was busy the whole day and not in town until late.
Congratulations Dave to you and your wife. My h and I did the same. The 9th anniversary which was Memorial Weekend of 09 times were rough. Last years Anniversary was our 10th. My husband was locked out of his job by the company so we did not get to fly somewhere as we planned but we went up to Tahoe and stayed and this 4, near 5 star resort there and then went to the Casino part, it snowed and we were the only ones there and everyone treated us like royalty. I guess it was the first day of the summer season and it snowed for two weekends, so they all cancelled. We felt like we were in the movie the shining, but with a good experience. No dead people or anything. lol
Well, I'm happy to report that I am feeling much better. I am about half way through the antibiotics and, yes, I will take all of them. My ear still doesn't feel quite right but it's just a little stuffy, not painful.
The best part is that I have a little more energy!! And that also means I'm not nearly so depressed.
Yesterday I planted about half the yacon and a couple of brugs. I found that I have a lot of miniscule goldenberry plants in a starting container. They are one of the "superfoods" that I think will do well here. I am very happy as the mission that I have chosen for myself here is to increase the number of food plants that are grown locally. I've had mixed results but am ever hopeful. Well, mostly hopeful.
Tony is here and we had a good talk. He's really happy I'm feeling better, too. I noticed yesterday that neighbor Tom has put a big boat trailer where it blocks our being able to back the van close to the arroyo when we have more tires, something Tom had promised not to do when I let him take title to part of the "no man's land" that I had arranged to buy. I was quite annoyed and also quite amused as I could easily retaliate by building a tire wall right on the property line which would both offend his sense of asthetics and make it difficult for him to bring in big machinery when he's playing "macho man." I restrained myself from doing anything but have a good laugh about it. Tony also thinks it's funny. Tom and Dana are my neighbors and I will do everything I can to prevent warfare. (repeat this one hundred times when tempted to relatiate)
It is spring here and the arrival of all the birds indicates that they are headed north, confident that spring will also arrive there.
I don't need any fig cuttings but if you know anyone who grows durian or mangosteen, I'd love to get some seeds. So far my cherimoya and star fruit seeds are not doing anything but I think they need warmer weather. Read yesterday that cherimoya needs to be at a high elevation to germinate but I'm hoping that's not true as I have lots of sseeds and would hate to have to go live on a mountain top until they germinated.
I'm so happy to have a return of some energy. Hope some of it passses on to those of you who are having a hard time of it.
hugs, katie
P.S. Forgot to say that I'm having a d-mail friendship with an Italian man who lives near Florence.
This rough patch would have been much rougher without my DG friends and I thank you all for being here.
kb
Good ... morning??? nope its afternoon now.... well as you can imagine My jaw dropped this morning when I saw the weather report for the week. well we managed to allow a cold front to sneak in and suprise us all. we are suposed to see upto 10" of snow over night.(hands up and screaming weeeeefor the down hill part of the weather roller coaster)
Sharon :
I would love a start of the black bamboo if you can spare it. I think I am loosing mine in the garage. its all dried up in the stems and leaves. the only thing I can think of is the Freakin cat decided it was a good spot to go pee. Its had plenty of water so its not run dry. I apreciate the offer for ajugabut I don't have room for any more in my beds. I am getting in Mahogany ajuga URC's to sell this fall. Its part of my vacation funding plan.
I tried to find the Australian violets on the plant finder and did not come up with anything.so what is it? do you have the botanical name for them???
You give so much to allof us is there any plants you are looking for and can't find or just haven't gotten around to getting for yourself?
Linda:
What are we going to do with you.... I am so sorry you have taken the fall you did. I know how easily that can happen and then its a nightmare to deal with recovery. I am praying for a speedy recovery so you can get back outside and enjoy the sunshine.
I was glad to see you took some time to get away and do a fun adventure. I have found that is one thing Kim and I enjoy when we can do it. We have done that with a trip to Branson,MO as well as our trips to see the grandbabbies and visits to Kim's best friends house (Dallas, TX). Its a refreshing change theat seems to charge the ole batteries.
Jeanette:
I had a great giggle at the mental image of you fighting the 5 gallon bucket for the brick of coir. I can see it now .....chain the bucket to a tree and then pull the coir out with another chain attached to a tractor ..... LOL
well the brugs are doing well.... not much activity on the buds they are still tiny little pea sized buds. I am thinking they are waiting for a bit more warmer conditions then the cold 60 degree garage floor has to offer. I am thinking the concrete floor is holding colder temps from outside and traveling to the grow room. Its all closed off except for the big crack inbetween the doors and the floor.
My step son built the room as a place for him to staywhen we had our house full. well it was too unbearable in the winter as we had an oldwooden garage door and a side door with a single piece of glass to keep the heat in. So naturally it was a lot colder than it is now. I love the garage door controller because its got a temperature reedout on the controller. The coldest I have seen was 57 degrees and that was when we had howling north winds and a blanket of snow. I will most likely replace the double closet doors with a more energy efficient one.
Katie:
What are the fruits like on the mangosteen or durian???? They look pretty kool but finicey....
Lee: I hope you are getting some relief from the winter weather.
well i managed to get the cold frame built but I need to tweek it so it fits the spot I have for it. Its on the south side of the greenhouse and gets full sun all day so I should have some growth on anything i put in there to winter over.
About 10 years ago I was working for a garden center and we planted creeping phlox in gallon pots... heeled in the pots and then covered them with a cold frame. That was a 1st of the year project and by the time the spring sales came around they were all full of bloom and sold out. We also potted up some bare root hostas, ferns, bleeding hearts and astilbe and put them in an unheated greenhouse and most of those sold out as well.
I have a source for #1 grade rooted divisions for everyone except for the RC's of creeping phlox. I am sure if I tried really hard i would be able to find those also but I don't think I have the room to do that here at the house, so I will have to stick with splitting my collection as it gets too big for its bed. I should have a lot of hosta splits this year as this is the 3rd year for my hosta bed in the front yard.
So far I have planted 25 flats of URC's of the following:
Phlox Subulata Emerald Pink
Phlox Subulata Scarlet Flame
Phlox Subulata Emerald Blue
PHLOX SUB. 'CANDY STRIPE'
PEROVSKIA ATRIPLICIFOLIA
VERONICA s. 'SUNNY BORDER BLUE'
Oh yea I almost forgot about the new intro's That Terra Nova has listed in their catalog. The new sun series of Gaillardia are so fantastic It looks like they have taken thethe newer fan fare from a year or two ago and improved on them. Please take the time to explore all the new introductions. You might see some of them this year at the big box stores. I know the year they introduced fanfare they were available in gallon pots at Home depot.
well I guess its time to make a new thread and call it a day as the weather is really playing rough this time around. I started feeling it last night.
Have a great day
Dave

I don't need any fig cuttings but if you know anyone who grows durian or mangosteen, I'd love to get some seeds. .
Oh, THAT ( durian) is what was stinking in the fridge! My husband went to an Asian market a week ago or so and I did not know what was going on. When he took it out, the whole house smelled like unburned gas. That must be what they use to put the odor into gas so people know when the gas is on with no flame. I thought I was going to die. If I wasn't feeling so awful already...Steve had to take care of that one! Then, his cousin told him that it had to be frozen right away...and something else, but I do not remember. He must have got a good laugh about that. Sorry, Katie - I am NOT going to retrieve any seeds from that one!
