Today, I am thankful for...#2

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

I am thankful for my new recipe for chicken and dumplings. I used flour tortillias, cut them up in slices and dropped them in broth, the people just eat them up. It is much easier then my old kind. It is a good feeling that people give you a hug for good food. I am thanking God that he let me discover my talent late in life, and that I got away from the office work. Cooking is lot's more fun than paper work.

(Zone 7a)

Today, I'm thankful for peach cobbler.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Today I'm thankful for candles and marshmellows. My they're good!!
Also for homemade soup and corn bread.
I tried making catsup once. Made strong soup but never got thick. But thats OK,I make good homemade bisquits. My A#1 accomplishment for my DH.
Carrie, I remember that article. Thought I'd posted to it but guess not. I did love it.

(Zone 7a)

"...candles and marshmellows. My they're good!!" Not together, I hope.

Today, I'm thankful my family is healthy and that my DD found a place to live.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I am thankful for all the wonderful articles I read here on DG, like the ketchup one you wrote Carrie. I am thankful that I had a least one year with a bumper crop of tomatoes and it was last summer. I was able to make that roasted tomato sauce recipe you referred to and it was scrumptious. It was wonderful to eat right from the pan with a spoon before it was even 'sauced'. Still have a couple bags of it in the freezer.

Dahlonega, GA

Today I'm thankful that I could order only a new base for my dehydrator instead of having to buy the whole thing .It died after only 17 years. And thankful for the new laptop so I could just get the number for the mfg and call direct . So easy .

Today, I am thankful for prepackaged salad greens. (Yeah, yeah, I know. But it's better than just iceberg and there's no waste for me.)

I am thankful for Q-tips

I am shiveringly thankful that the cold is easing. :-)

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

I am grateful that the snow is gone, I was in the house for 3 days, finaly went to work on Wedn. Everybody goes crazy in Augusta when it snows, it only happens few times in a year.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Today I am REALLY thankful that school started again (no more snow days) so that my regular PCA of gold could come back!

(Zone 7a)

Today, I'm thankful I'm not in a flood zone.

Today, I am thankful for

Cedar wood

Curling ribbon. I cain't tie a bow fer nuthin!

The start of the Ft Worth Fat Stock Show. Means the days are noticeably longer, the rain will be falling soon, and Spring is almost here.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I remember the Fort Worth livestock show. My nephews went every year when they were teenagers.
LOL kwanji, I roast the marshmellows over a candle flame. I can't build a fire outside in the snow, except i did one time to make coffee when our electricity went off in Texas.
I'm thankful my Texas nephew called. It's been awhile. I'm thankful i got to go to town today. Thankful i got 2 magazines to read. Am thankful for my 3 cats.I gave them a box to play with and they made me laugh.
Vickie

edit to say--It's fun to watch 3 fat cats push each other out of a small box only big enough for 1.

I am thankful for sturdy plants that survived and even thrived through the cold (for us) 23 degrees we got down to and have also made it through our 115 degree summers. Who knew petunias could do that? Most of the others are perennials, so they are hardier.

(Zone 7a)

Today, I'm thankful for VERY generous DG members who contributed seeds to my DD.

Midland City, AL

Today I am thankful to be wrong. There was a young lady who came through Amargia years ago via child protective services. She was in bad emotional shape and I didn't hold out much hope for her getting her life together. She telephoned to report she is now in college and it sounds like she is doing well. (Jim)

Midland City, AL

Vickie, you and I will have to get together and write "The Secrets of Candle Cuisine." Like, Secret Tip #1: Use utility candles, not scented ones. You really must try roasting marshmallow peeps at Easter. :-)
Thanks, Kiseta. I'll try those tortilla dumplings. There are times I want comfort food, like chicken and dumplings, but don't have the time.
Today, I am thankful for all the different flavors of low-fat yogurt. A satisfying, low calorie snack. that is helping me stay on my diet. (BTW, Vickie, we'll have to come up with some diet recipes for "Candle Cuisine." lol. ~Nadine~

Love those confirmations that, yes, what you do makes a difference. :-)

Today I am thankful for:

Already shelled sunflower seeds (craving salad-salad-salad all day and the seeds are good for crunch :-))

The works of Dorothy Gilman

(Debra) Garland, TX

Today I am thankful that:

It's been drizzling all day. Spring will be nice and lush with some more of this.

I had extra canned dog food, because I forgot to bring home more dry.

There is a low-thorn white hybrid tea rose. Guess what's on the garden order list for February planting? :-)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

February planting? Oh my gosh! We're talking about buying a snow-blower when they go on sale in Feb.!

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I'm with Carrie, But the last of February is when the green leaves of spring flowers start showing up.
I need some of that drizzle Debra. Please send some up.
I'm thankful for comet and Lysol spray.Better add bleach,I use a lot of all three.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Yes Carrie, February planting. Was just thinking this AM about getting some seeds started....

I am thankful for programs like this one for youths (brought tears to my eyes) and only wish there were tons more like this across the country. It would be soooo good for most kids.

Debra, I was trying to describe Zuzu to Mama K. Is she a wire-haired terrier? Zuzu, that is. :-)
Thanks, Quilty. Awesome link!
I can relate to the people in that project. Amargia, however, started out as a totally useless piece of land. (It was bought for $500 an acre so you can imagine the state of it.) It was infertile sand in some places and hard red clay in others with serious erosion problems. We’ve still got a way to go before it is the showplace we envision, but it gets more fertile and more beautiful every year. I guess only those of us who remember what it looked like here in the beginning can fully appreciate it. The secret of Amargia is that it becomes a living symbol to anyone who stays here long. No matter how screwed up your life may be, you start to believe you can really make it better with time and effort. People begin to see that making something out of less than ideal life circumstances and re-claiming a piece of neglected land sort of mirror each other. (If they don’t notice the parallel themselves, someone is bound to point it out to them, complete with photos from the early years. lol.) You just do the best you can every day with what you have to work with and changes happen. Real fundamental changes that last.
I remember C., the girl Papa Jim mentioned. Mama Kay talked me into taking her out with me to movies and things like that. She was intelligent in the academic sense, but an emotional mess. That she would get her life together with all she had going against her is like a miracle.
Today, I guess I’m thankful for miracles.
....and, cabbage soup. lol. (I’m becoming a big cabbage fan and that, in itself, is a small miracle.)
Carrie, have you heard about Vocaloids? Not sure how I feel abut those. ~Nadine~

(Debra) Garland, TX

Nadine, she is Westie and some sort of small wire hair. She weighs 10 pounds.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

She looks so sweet Debra,Hope she is better.
Nadene, I think the miracle lays in Amargia. Someone has to plant a seed of hope before it can take root. There is no hope in abuse.
Cabbage soup sounds good. Love the stuff.
I'm thankful for my SIL. He came up and cleaned my living room carpet today. I was very grateful.
Came across a fun receipe on cooks.com today.
Cowboy Seafood Dinner.
1 CAN SARDINES 1 BOX CRACKERS

Open sardines with key. Place a cracker on pommel of saddle. Carefully lay a sardine on the cracker. Eat. Continue with this procedure untill you run out of crackers, sardines,or room in your belly. Serves one.

Dahlonega, GA

Cando , that really happened ! A widowed policy holder of mine was pestered all the time by a clerk in a small town (Bradley , Ark. Population , 320 ) to take her out for a fish dinner . He finally told her to be ready after work and they would go out . He picked her up and drove about six miles north to a little gro . store at the crossroads and went inside . When he came out , he brought a can of sardines and a box of crackers .His brother was a very dear friend of mine and told this story around town on J T . Needless to say , the clerk never bothered him again .
I am thankful that J T was a friend also , even if his practical jokes were sometimes out of line .

Today, I'm thankful for warmer weather so I can get out and finish some things in the yard I didn't have a chance to do last Fall.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I am thankful for the beautiful, varied topography and weather here. We went looking at property for sale. The lot we did get out to walk around on had beautiful California Live Oaks growing along a gurgling (likely seasonal) creek with bouldered hills all around. Very quiet, no neighbors (good), 3 semi graded pads. 30 acres/$125K. Last week we saw one that was 16 acres, also in bouldered property for the same price. That one had a view looking out to other hills, a lake and the town in the distance. A lot further out from our established doctors though. Had to leave before looking at other properties up there because the 2600 ft elevation was causing a lot of pain in DG's recently operated on eye. Coming down the hill toward home, it was pretty looking at the meadows and the mountains in the distance with snow on their tops. Our County has just about everything, except an ocean (and is bigger than 3 of our US states). The biggest problem (as I see it) here is our debt and politics.

So sorry, back to being thankful..........

(Debra) Garland, TX

I am thankful for Strawberry Bread for breakfast and to have uncovered a prime suspect in the Mystery of the Missing Strawberries.
MK plants strawberries as an underplanting in the flower beds, but prize strawberries I have my eye on come up missing at their peak of ripeness. I just discovered Tater-dog is crazy about strawberry bread. I believe I've found the culprit! ~N~

Thankful that the stomach flu which laid out virtually all of my front office staff, all at once today (including me), seems to be only the 24 hour variety.

Thankful that the two littlest dogs stayed right by me all night and helped with the chills.

VERY thankful for Gatorade. :-)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, poor Debra, don't breathe in my direction!

Thankful that my afternoon PCA does such a good job of stretching my legs (when she's in the mood); it really does a much better job than drugs, or than drugs alone.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Oh Digger, how wonderful for you!
