What is eating my cyclemen

San Jose, CA

I have raised cyclamen for years. Mine are in my garden outdoors in a shady protected area. They are blooming now but all of a sudden for the first time ever, I see dime size holes in the leaves. What is eating them?

Slugs or snails, possibly. Or it could be the effects of hail if your area is prone to that.

Thanks, Snails eat everything else in my garden but never had them touch Cyclamen. But I'll put out some bait.

No hail here.

treehug---look under the pot that is sitting next to the plant. Slugs and snails love the bottom of pots sitting on the ground. I have had grasshoppers leave bigs holes like that. Hope it is snails or slugs because you can control them.

Look like slugs and snails for sure - look at the heuchera - also holes in it too. Slugs and snails are messy feeders and leaves very different sized holes in leaves. My experiences with grasshoppers is they really loves grasses - figures! I notice grasshoppers only when there are large patches of unmown or very infrequently mown lawns and they also loves to be in taller ornamental grasses. Also maybe when you look under the pot or other hideholes you might find some other bugs that could cause the problem - just tell us what they are.

if there are no slime trails from the slugs, it could also be ear wigs, they feed at night.
