when to add to your soil?

Shirley, IN

I need to test my soil in my garden , I am sure it needs some kind of nutrients . should I wait till spring to test it, and once I do test it and I need to add something do i need to wait till spring to add what ever it needs? also do you need to wait awhile before you plant once you have added to your soil or is it ok to plant right away?

Douglasville, GA

Go ahead and test it, some things need to be added now, others at planting time. Here in Ga we add lime in the fall, as well as organic matter to decompose during the winter. Depends on what you are adding as to planting right away; you wouldn't plant right away if you were adding manure that wasn't well composted. Have you tested your soil in the past?

Funtomatoes, no I have never tested my soil , right now the ground is partly frozen here . Ithis will be my second year at giving gardening a try so I dont know much about what to do to help my soil but I figure testing the soil is a good start. I have a garden area for , vegetables and a couble of berry patches . will testing kits they sell at farm stores tell me what the soil is lacking?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The kits give you fairly minimal information--I'd call your county extension office and ask them for a lab that you can send the soil to for testing. It'll cost a little more, but the information you get back will be much more useful.

As far as adding any necessary amendments, if your ground is partly frozen you'll find it much easier to wait until it thaws out in the spring to do that.
