mulch

Newnan, GA

Trying to touch base with other gardeners. I live on an old pine farm, consequently I have a lot of decayed pine laying on the ground. Can I break this up and make mulch for flowers beds?

Yes, you can; however, pine needles create acidic soil over time. If you have Rhododendron, Azalea, or other 'ericaceous' plants, this is perfect as they are acid-lovers. Other plants with more alkaline or neutral soil needs may not respond so well.

Best to compost these needles and branches separately as an 'erica' mix, for big beautiful rhodo blooms -- I just dump the needles directly on the base of mine and they absolutely love it.

**It may be a good idea to simply leave the pine chaff on the ground underneath the trees -- as the litter trees produce usually serves as fertilizer for that tree!**

And it also keep the weed diversity down
