Need help! Ideas for moving my strawberries into containers

Galesburg, MI(Zone 6a)

I have about 40-50 strawberry plants in a raised bed. They were planted in spring 2010 so they are fairly young but did very well throughout the year. My problem is that I want to use that bed for a different purpose and I don't have any other available garden space to transplant them. So I was thinking about some type of container that I can hang from the large expanses of privacy fence that surround my whole house. I had the idea to use a over the door shoe organizer and plant each one in a shoe space. But would that be enough root space? And would they still be OK overwinter? Any suggestions or other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I would be concerned with the roots freezing and the soil drying out being hung up in the air.

That was the same concern voiced when I posted this in the Container Gardening forum. I think I am going to try some cinder blocks and maybe a half barrel. Thanks for the feedback!

Strawberries are perennial plants and usually require 2-3 growing seasons to produce the biggest fruit - I don't imagine moving these plants into pots would kill them, but you'll definitely lose some size and/or quantity of berries.

Yeah I figured I would be risking that. I didn't harvest from that at all last year and picked off flowers to encourage root development. I will probably so the same this year to give them time to settle in their new homes. Thanks for the feedback!
