In researching, I have found the chia seed is good for us. Does anyone grow the chia plant?
Chia Plant
I'll be watching this thread since I now buy chia seed for my health drink. Hadn't thought of growing it myself and now I too want to grow it if I can.
patti47 - everyone has heard of "Chia Pets" - the seed used is "Chia Seeds".
Okay, I didn't know this either until it was pointed out on Doctor Oz's show! (LOL)
For information about the Chia Seed, go to http://www.associatedcontent.com/subject/article/Chia++Plant or Sun Organic Farms or call l-888-269-9888. I don't know if they offer seeds to plant or to eat. Is there a difference?
I think the question is where will it grow successfully. It's a south American plant so might not work for me in the NW. Texas sounds more likely behillman. Yeah Honey that was quite the revelation for me too. The thing is, being able to grow the sprouts inside is not the same as the mature plant yielding seeds. And sufficient quantiies, too, to make it worthwhile. By the way, my new process for my use of chia seeds is to hydrate them first. Whether they are whole or ground, by combining with water first in a ratio of 9 to 1, 1 being the seeds, a gel forms. This gel needs a few minutes to form. The gel is added to the drink. It doesn't do anything icky to the drink (smoothy). The full benefits are thereby realized.
Native Seeds/SEARCH sells desert chia.
Salvia columbarea is the name of the seed they have. The chia I have read about and use is salvia hispanica. I wonder what the difference is. The description from the site you listed dlbailey sounds like they are similar, and may be synonymous.
So now we're consumming our Chia Pets? Will there be no end to the carnage???!!!!
Patt47;; You write that by drinking the gel from the hygrated chia seeds, you receive benefits. What are some of the benefits? I'm asking because I have never heard anyone speak of the health benefits.
Behiiman I extrapolated from what I read and hydrated them to see for myself. Since the gel formation takes a few minutes I figured it might be best to do that before adding to my smoothy. The benefit is in the bulk that is good for our intestinal health. I just read this stuff and integrate into my diet without remembering all the details.
