I am trying to put my list of plants that I am going to be ordering for spring planting. I found these Monkhoods and also Actaea Pachypoda sometimes refered to as Doll's Eyes. We have a few pomeranian dogs and was wondering if anyone knew if these plants would attract them to them; or do they have any offensive smell that would actually keep them away from them or would your suggestion be to just not plant them and take any chances. I don't know if any of you have had any experience with these plants or not.
Thanks
poisonous plants
Some dogs are smart enough not to eat poisonous plants (most poisonous plants don't taste very nice, so even if they nibbled it most would stop after one nibble) but some dogs will eat anything so it's really more about what your dogs are like vs the plants themselves. If they've got a tendency to munch on garden plants then particularly if they spend a lot of unsupervised time in the yard I'd play it safe and not plant anything poisonous in an area they have access to. I'd also worry about the Actaea if you have young children--it has cool looking berries which could be attractive to children.

I don't think they have ever been around anything but desert plants/cacti until we moved and then only grass with a very few flowers to date. Guess I'd be safer to plant them on the side of the house where they have no access them. No little children to worry about, just the pups! My husband told me he thought some plants give off foul odors that repel pets and certain wildlife that why we thought we'd ask. Thanks!
I don't think either of these are especially strong smelling so I wouldn't count on them being repelled. They undoubtedly taste nasty, but since your dogs are small it wouldn't take as much to hurt them as it would with larger dogs so unless you know they're not garden munchers I'd play it safe and keep the poisonous stuff in an area they can't access. Chances are they'd be OK and won't eat them, but no sense in taking a chance if you've got another perfectly good spot for the plants.
