Its cold in my garden

Plantersville, TX(Zone 9a)

Are you guys walking around with coats on & planting transplants of lettace in your gardens? Or is it just me. I know its nicer then trying to fight the l00 degree summer weather.

Oregano, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme are alive. The asparagus is probably alive, too. It was 15F this morning!

Doing that right now, behillman. My Weather Channel desktop program says it is 52 deg right now and it is quite windy. But, there isn't a cloud in the sky and it feels great being outside.

I have 8 lettuce plants that have been under lights in the garage. They are in 4" nursery pots and the leaves are getting just as long. I took them outside to harden them off a while ago- is that necessary with lettuce? I will bring them inside tonight since the temps will hit 31 deg, I hear.

All of us zone 9ers will agree that this is better than summer. I am surprised at how well my oriental veggies are doing as the temperatures zoom up and then down. Only the real hot weather crops are dead so far. And yes, we just picked lettuce for dinner and did it bundled up in our coats.

Yep, John, hardening off those lettuce plants is necessary. Once they are hardened off though you can leave them out in the cold just fine. Their growth will slow down if temps stay consistently low but unless it gets super duper cold they should at least stay alive (barring any arctic winds). What kind of lettuce is it, by the way? Leaf lettuce, head lettuce, loose-head, etc?

Aquaannie, nice looking crop you got there!

I have Red Sails (leaf) and Calamar (head) right now. They will make fine transplants but I do not have a place for them just yet.

I left them outside for only a couple of hours this afternoon and back to the garage they went. Thanks for the advice, Shoe.

Aquannine,
That's some mighty intense planting you've got going on in those boxes. Looks like you're planting in 4 sections of each box, yes? no?
