Christmas cactus

Indianapolis, IN

What can I do about little bugs that fly & crawl into the dirt of my christmas cactus. I have sprayed an insect killer on it but can't seem to get rid of them. They look like fruit flies. Thank you

Ease up on the watering can. Fungus gnats are usually the fruit of over-watering.

Hey,
There are a number of ways to manage fungus gnats. I detail these in my blog if you want to check it out! Some methods include drawing out larva using potato pieces, others involve utilize apple cider vinegar as a trap and poison. If you wish to kill the flies, a solution of 1 table spoon dish soap (without bleach), and 3 table spoons Listerine, diluted in a spray bottle, will kill all soft-bodied insects and emerging larva when the plant is misted.

Hello everyone,

I just got a christmas cactus last week. The blooms were beautiful. But now the buds are dropping off without blooming. I've read that they can be pretty fussy plants and if you just move them a little, buds will fall off.????Is that true and if it is, how can I get it to start budding again before Christmas is over?

Yes, they can drop their buds if you move them. Best thing to do if you want it to make more buds is leave it alone and don't move it anymore, hopefully it should make new buds soon. And of course make sure you water it properly, also make sure it doesn't get too much artificial light in the evening hours since it's shorter days that trigger them to form blooms.

I seem to not be able to kill my Christmas cactus. Its been a year since I put it outside and now we are in winter. The main plant died but I saved 2 cuttings of it. Should i just get a new one or try to save the cuttings?
