winter vegetables in south Texas, Corpus christi

Portland, TX

After the city of portland tore up my yard repairing a storm drain line, and I've restored it, I have some bare area that will make for a perfect flower/veggie garden.
What veggies can I plant now.
PS: Just moved here this year from Kalifornia, and absolutely love it here!!!!!! Never ever going to go back, not even for a visit...friends/family can come here.

You can plant lettace, carrots, onions, garlic, any greens. That will work for starters. These crops all love the cold weather.

Beets, spinach, english or snow/sugar snap peas, turnips, radishes, lettuces, turnips, and any cool weather crops are definitely ok. If you are close to the water, then you might be able to grow other stuff that doesn't have to have hot weather. I'd guess that you don't get many freezes in the Corpus Christi area, so you could start spring vegetable (tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, beans, squash, etc.) pretty early.

Don't forget cabbages and brussels sprouts, too!

What about flowers like pansies, mums, bluebonnets.
We can, and if we put clear plastic above the area, say a couple of feet off the ground, that would improve things right?

We've been down around 33 and 34 degrees in the area, not right here next to the water, so we can actually start spring veggies?

Also, we need a quick screen, as the neighbors built a humongous deck that overlooks our yard, someone said hops would grow to 10' tall in a few months, does that seem possible?

Thanks people for all the input/ideas already.
