SoCal planting - Can I sow directly into the soil in Dec??

Ojai, CA

Hi there, I don't have much experience for winter gardening. I live in Southern Ca, and I just moved to Ojai. We have frost here occasionally, which I have never dealt with. How do I proceed? Should I start seeds in trays indoors? Should I start in the beds? Should I create a mini greenhouse over the beds? We had frost on monday, but it's warmer now. Have no idea how the weather will be here. Basically I guess I just need to know, do seedlings need extra warmth to get started, or can I just plant them out there??? Thanks!!!

i lost a bunch in the frost and have now mulched everything but the natives

Given the fact that our "winters" here are so unpredictable, it might be better to start your seeds in flats or cell packs (depending on what exactly you're trying to grow) and try to keep them in some sort of temporary covered set up which will keep them warm and hasten germination as well as protect them from frost.

It all depends on what it is you're trying to grow.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up planting everything in the beds, and creating a mini geenhouse with plastic. Kind of a pain, but hopefully it will keep it warm enough to germinate. I usually start seedling in trays, but I have no space for them where I am now. I'll keep you posted on how it works out!! 34 degrees predicted next week!! : )
