Arlon, Belgium

So, what is the meaning of muricatum ?
What is the etymology of the word muricatum ?
Solanum not difficult, but "muricatum" ?

As also in e.g. Pinus muricata

"Rough with short hard points like the shell of Murex" – W T Stearn, Botanical Latin

Resin

Keaau, HI

Muricatum means, rough on the surface.

Keaau, HI

Muricate is the root of the word:

Thanks, but Solanum muricatum not rough at all, no hard points.

Keaau, HI

Although Solanum muricatum is not rough with sharp points, that is the meaning of the species name.

There must be a reason why somebody called Solanum muricatum Solanum muricatum !

Keaau, HI

I wonder if the original wild plant possessed that trait. What we see today are cultivars.

Probably ! But who gave the name ? Is there some litterature about this ?
Some motivation of description from the hand of the person calling this plant "muricatum".
Sorry, but explanation not really clear. Thanks !

William Aiton, in Hortus Kewensis 1: 250-251, 1789.

Copy from google books below - you'll need to understand Latin ;-)

In that gardenology link, under Standard cyclopedia of horticulture it says:
the branches often with rough warty excrescences
In the link Resin listed, it's the plant not the fruit being described.

This for me very good explanation. Not the skin of the fruit is roughly (muricatum), but branches.
So thank you very well. Even i can't understand latin, this explanation can satisfy me.
