Babies from fruit trees or plants

Plantersville, TX(Zone 9a)

Does anyone see babies growing next to their fruit trees. Anyone have any baby peach trees. These are suppose to do very well in producing & growing. How about baby apple trees.

I've never had my fruit trees self-sow from fallen fruits... but maybe it's more likely in a warmer climate!

Many trees especially peach trees will sucker from the roots. In most cases root stock is not noted for edibility. Even seedlings are hit or miss as most are hybrids, maintained by grafting.

The majority of fruit trees are effectively clones. The Honeycrisp apple you eat at the grocery store comes originally from a specific tree that has had branches grafted onto standardized rootstocks that grow in specific soil conditions.

The reason why we do it that way is mostly quality control. You know exactly what sort of apple, pear, peach, or plum you will get when your tree grows old enough to produce fruit. The rootstock lets you know what soil it will like best. You also know what the growth potential is for height, width, and age at which it should fruit from the combination of both.

Pomegranates, figs, and some grapes also grow well on their own roots and will grow back from a hard freeze so long as the root still lives. Wine grapes are usually grafted, but table grapes and muscats aren't.
