Is it possible to dry the seeds that are inside fruits (and veggies) to plant them the following year? If so, I would be interested in knowing how to go about doing this. I am considering planting a few fruit and veggies next growing season, but would hate to just throw away the seeds from that year's crop without atleast trying to see if I can dry them out and plant them again the following year. Any tips?
Drying fruit seeds for future planting?
Yes, just soak them in water to clean them. Then lay out on a flat plate & dry. After they dry for about a week, store them in a dry air tight jar. Plant in the spring., or fall next year. I have a habit now that I cannot throw away a seed. When I eat a fruit, I save the seed. I used to throw out the seed on the ground, & it would grow, but at the wrong time of year, so be sure to plant at the right time, like spring.Of course, if you take cuttings of these fruits, you will see fruits much sooner, & similiar to the parent plant., then from the seed.
Saved seed from hybrid fruits and vegetables will not grow "true", but it's still fun to sow the seeds to see what you get.
Heirloom seeds should grow "true" but I have had mixed results with them.
Thank you!! I think I will play around with it! WOOT! LOL!
