Bald Eagle - Our National Symbol - Vol. #7

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Linth, thanks for taking all the wonderful Bald Eagle, photos and sharing them with us. There are quite a few in this area. Hunting in Okanogan river or cleaning up carrion.

Thanks again everyone. I'm glad that you enjoy them.

This is a typical day but the key is getting them in action a little closer..... but not too close. I mentioned earlier that the rocks in the background are upwards to 2,000 feet, or better. So, the photo quality is not so good.

That is neat!

Another pose of same two eagles fighting over a fish.

Pelle, it is neat but the fact that there is a lot of room for improvement in the photo is what keeps me going back, and back, and back .

Here's a flying adult with the dam breast in the background .....

Two more in a chase around the towers. I think I mentioned that the towers are about 800 feet away.

Another chase ........

Let's get a little blue sky for a change with a juvenile Bald Eagle. It makes a big difference. I like to have my cake and eat it too !

And another juvenile ......

I'm trying to not duplicate any but one or two might slip through on occasion. Here's an adult against the blue sky.

I'm hoping to get back tomorrow morning but have the start of a sore throat. It's supposed to be clear with a temperature of 29 degrees ...... 20 wind-chill (12mph wind). I'll just dress like Gary does in Alaska. I'll have my hand-warmers and toe-warmers.

Linth, fabulous thread! You know where I'd be spending my time this winter. I'll be all bundled up; and watching your marvelous threads on these magestic birds!

Melbourne, FL

Amazing shots as always. As much as I would love to see so many Bald Eagles, I don't think I could stand being out in the cold to do it.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Wonderful and clear photos Linth. I can't believe it's so cold there and you'd risk going out in it-take care. We want you healthy so we can see lots more photos.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks. I did get back yesterday, arriving at 7:30 a.m. and stayed for six hours. Activity was sporadic. Because of heavy rains up north in Pennsylvania, the dam was pushing a lot of water through. I have never seen the water as high while I have been at the dam. The rocks across the river where the eagles usually sit could not be seen. So it forced the eagles to go elsewhere. I spent most of the day chatting with a couple from Ohio who drove 7 hours to visit Conowingo. Burd, we talked about McGee Marsh and Ottawa National wildlife Refuge and YOUR warblers.

Here is a photo from last week. The eagles are sitting on the rocks across the river. The photo has 7 Bald Eagles and 2 Great Blue Herons.

Wonderful shots Linth! I see 3 Great Blue Herons in that one shot.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

You're right, pelle. There are three GBH's.

Normally there are fisherman and/or photographers immediately to the left of the life floats which are attached to a railing. Under the water is a brand new multi-million dollar pavilion that was recently built for visitors, photographers and fisherman.

Don't ask me to explain this photo. I don't recall whether this eagle dropped the fish or if another out-of-the-picture eagle dropped it.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Not a very good photo but it shows another eagle losing their fish. This happens quite often. For some reason, 75% of the fishing shots are tail shots. I've been told that the wind determines the direction they take in catching a fish ?

I love that picture with the Eagles and Herons on the rocks.

This series of photos was taken last week of an adult Bald Eagle taking his fish to a "safe" (?) place to eat.

What fabuluous pictures! Thanks Linth for sharing those with all of us.

All so great Linth.

Lock Haven, PA(Zone 6b)

Your eagles sure know how to pose in your pics. Most enjoyable.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Thank you all ......

missysrose, seeing that you live in Loch Haven, PA brings back a lot of fond memories. And, it's ironic that Loch Haven University's mascot is the Bald Eagle. If I might get off the subject a bit, I traveled many times through Loch Haven via Williamsport & Jersey Shore toward Renovo and onward to Wharton, in Potter County. I belonged to a hunting camp just south of Wharton for nearly 50 years. You live in beautiful country. I would assume an occasional Golden or Bald Eagle wanders along the Susquehanna River near Loch Haven.

I'll keep posting a few photos each day or two until I have exhausted them or you all tell me to stop. This is a photo of an adult Bald Eagle taken a month ago. Nothing beats a blue sky and excellent lighting.

Sometimes they are quite concealed from view as they sit deeper into the forest. I forgo a lot of sitting Bald Eagles preferring the in-flight or fishing opportunities.

Thumbnail by linthicum
Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

This one appears to have already feasted on his catch. Probably another eagle was annoying him.

Thumbnail by linthicum
Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Another nice catch ...... I often watch the local fishermen unsuccessfully trying to catch their dinner while an eagle easily dives down and plucks one out of the water.

Off in the distance another adult flies by with his recent catch.

A little photoshopping on this photo. I added a little fog or haze to the photo in an attempt to overshadow the tower in the background.
