Plant Propagation part XXV based on my own experience

mulege, Mexico

You behaved well when it was stressful to do so. You're doing fine.

Wow, everyone is planning and/or planting and here I am up to my %^&*( in snow and cold. Have been quilting, and playing with Storm.
One of my little ones isn't doing so well, and I think I might lose him. Won't eat, for the last few days, and today he quit drinking water. Have tried everything, even the food the Vet gave me, to no avail. The boys are 12 years old so I guess I just need to think of those years we have had them and be thankful for each day I have left with them..
Wish the weather would settle down here so I could at least think of the garden, but I have too much on my plate right now. I still have some seed from Jeanette and Dave from last year, so I guess I will start them in a month or so and call it good. The SPV aren't doing as well as before, not sure why, but I think I have some kind of bug on them. Thank goodness they are seperate from the rest of the plants. I have sprayed them, so we shall see what happens.

Ev am in the piggy swap? If I am I did not know it. What in the heck is it? or are you seeing if I want anything left over? I am out of the loop lately. Life has been busy at the holidays and with my work injury now, it has added more crap on my plate, screwed with my plans and messed my head up a bit. I have a lot of work at my job that feels like it will lead to not, since my injury. My mind is trying not to worry though and trust it will work out. Time for fun and banter is not plentiful though.

If you have any more Petunia seeds, that is my project this year I think. Climbing things like MG of different varieties are good. Stuff that grows with minimal water is always good. Otherwise if I am not in the Piggy Swap, no worries. Thanks for all the banter over the last year. It is one of the few regular threads I follow anymore. I am trying to go over to Mars a little more often. Less than here though.

Evelyn, I meant to tell you about wintersowing. I liked the clear bottles that my sister gave me for planting. She had gotten them with water for her wine making. They were clear 1/2 gallon and have handles. Very nice. Next were juice bottles, a couple liters, also clear, anything clear and then the milk bottles. half or whole gallons. I used my heating iron for my soldering to make drain holes in them and also to start cutting them for the hinge. Then just used a piece of duck tape to keep them closed after planting. But I really liked anything clear so I didn't have to look down the hole or undo the tape to see if they were growing or need water. Then just take the lid off so they get some rain etc.

But sometimes I was moving them in protection from too much rain, and then out so they could get some sun, etc. A real PITA.

JB, those machines they use for those tests are not cheap. Somebody has to pay for them. LOL. When I had something wrong with my stomach they put me thru all the heart machines, lung machines, MRIs etc. tests that had nothing to do with my problem. All they need is someone with good insurance. They see you coming so watch out. Am a cynic. You betcha.

Finally I went to the local clinic and the PA (physicians Assistant) did a couple of little tests and told me to pack my bag and get to a hospital fast and plan on staying. Which I did and then went by helicopter to a hospital in Spokane. Spent 5 weeks in ICU. Guess the moral of my story is that all those tests did was help pay for the machinery and didn't tell a thing about my problem. I should have sued those A**h****. Maybe they wouldn't do it to the next person.

As far as the yellow cactus goes, you did more than most sellers would have done, so forget it.

Dawn, don't know what you guys are talking about a swap here. I share what I have with anyone on here that can use it. No swap needed. Which reminds me, I still have your caster bean seeds here all packaged up and ready to mail. Maybe I will give them to Bob to mail next week. Sorry.

Finally got another batch of tamales made and only one to go. Gee, maybe I'll make one or us. We love them but they are a lot of work. Not really, I just like to whine.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

lol Don't worry it is Winter. You are ambitious to make the tamales. I have done it several times and without an army it is quite an undertaking.

I use box tape on my water bottles once I hinge them.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

good evening everyone..... a warm welcome to Katiebear..... we are an odd lot but we do try to have fun here and we do sometimes get in a spirited discussion on what we are doing and how/why..... right now its a bit too cold to do much planting.... unless you are in Key West or some other tropical spot ..... and if you are there why did you not take me :( lol

Jeanette be carefull with the castor beans in the mail... it might set the dogs off and have home land security knocking down your door.... ok most likely not but it was a strange thought I had.

Ok I found one outlet that sells the euphorbia in flats of 28 but they have a min of 4 flats per order

here is the link to their promo sheets

http://www.provenwinners.com/pwcommon/files/pdf/DiamondFrost.pdf

They grow a lot of stuff i don't think it would be hard to put together an order its just getting others who will comit. Of course thats why I started doing bigger orders.... I just said "to heck with it" only a bit more colorfull language..... I got tired of missing out on the plants I wanted to have going. at this rate i should be ordering a semi full in a few years ..... HeHe

How soon do you need your plants? The more I read it the more I am thinking I might just do it myself. they have a couple of petunia's I like

http://epicas.pwfourstar.com/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=wsepip/env/envu001.r?vCacheId=85159575

supertunia Pretty much picasso and supertunia Vista Bublegum

I used to watch a show with someone Something allen smith . he made some nice displays of them. I tend to shy away from tunia's because of the catterpillars but maybe

I would ask the dude I told you about on ebay 1st to see if he can get it for you because they were like $1.30 each not sure the exact amount as the catalog is in the other room. I know I am planning on buying 2 flats from him when I get back from florida. I am splitting one with a friend and the otherone I just like the flower on them....
impatiense swirl monet mix..... It just speaks to me.....

anyhoo its santa's night tonight as we will be in sunny floriday on the 25th so we are doing the rest of the fam tomorrow.

Have a great evening Dave

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Merry Christmas then David.
I want to get some Supertunia Picasso seeds.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hello all you snow/rain birds out there on the West Coast. You are certainly getting hammered with the elements this week. We are only expecting flurries. We were fortunate, the coastal storm went West and stayed off shore, so we will only get flurries and maybe a dusting at the shore.
Today is the last day of the Christmas Tree Sales. We are all but sold out of most of the good trees. Quite a few Charlie Browns left, but they will be cut down and chopped. Then the work begins getting the field back in shape to plant this Spring. God knows what the Spring will be like considering how crazy the weather has been this past six months. Oh well....we will suvive.
I stayed in yesterday and wrapped Gifts, etc. I did take two long walks but I was on the tired side and decided to take a day off.
I really need to get moving and get out to the Christmas Store. No customers, prices reduced to nothing but for those who did come we made a lot of people happy. Considering we had very little stock to choose from, we did o.k. and we were expecting to do worse. God is good to us.
Talk later. Love ya. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, who had the sheets of 28?

Who was the dude on ebay?

Hope Santa was good to you last night. When do you leave for Florida?

JB, sounds like you are doing ok after all. Can't you cut the CB trees in lengths and drill holes for candles maybe? How about for next year?

Yes, we did get some snow yesterday, only a couple inches, but they assure us that the next one coming in soon will be a big one. We will send that one to the rest of you maybe in time for Christmas. That means you Lee and JB anyway. Oh, and Linda.

Think Sharon, Dawn and Evelyn might miss this one.. Oh well, your time is coming.

Yes Dawn, one more batch of tamales, or maybe 2, one for us, and that will be it for another year. But, I can do those after Christmas but before New Years since my sister and BIL are in Costa Rica and won't be back until then. They bought a condo there so are spending a month there. Nice time to get out of here huh?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Forgot to tell you I bought myself a Christmas present.

A new powerhead for my vacuum!! TADA

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I could eat a good tamale!

A powerhead for your vacuum? Whatever floats your boat woman.

The tree count is down big time. We sold 1/3 the number of trees we sold last year. We closed and tore down the Christmas Store. Now we are putting things away and that will be it. We have one cut tree left over so now my daughter will use that one. The rest in the field will be cut down or dug out. Whatever. Nothing can be done with them except a chopper and that will help someone at sometime. The Township chops them and the people of the Township can come and get the chopped stuff for their gardens or flower beds. I would not use it but some people do. My exterminator always said do not put wood chips near your house. Draws termites, etc. I guess he knows what he is talking about.

Would you believe I am down to one cat. The big cat, he must weigh 12 pounds, is missing. He is the oldest and was dropped off here in our tree field about 7 years ago. I had him neutered two years ago and he put on alot of weight. Maybe he died of too much fat. Oh well, one less mouth to feed. I will miss the old guy. He was finally getting tame. He was the father of the twins. He has six toes. I hope nothing got him and if he is dead he is someplace quiet and warm. He is not in his bed in the barn and has not been there all day or last night. Hmmmmm Mystery !

Gotta go. Time for cocktails. LOL JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, I make good tamales. If I thought they would get there and still be good I would send you some.

LOL, you don't think much of my Christmas present I can tell.

They probably don't put the chips near their houses. The so called experts say 6". between the wood of the house and the soil. Now my dad always said to NEVER stack firewood near the house. Termites.

Years ago I had an entire small wall of my daughter's closet in her bedroom eaten up by termites. I was telling some people at work about it over coffee break, and one of the fellows from New York says "you can't possibly have termites in your house with all the trees around here".

LMAO. That's an Easterner for you. Whoops, sorry JB.

Your cat will probably show up again. They normally do. Altho I said the same thing about the twins didn't I?

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Practical woman ha Jeanette.
Glad you did ok this year JB. It all helps in these times.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

JB, cocktails at 1:47pm. Oh well, I guess it is 7:47pm some place. Sorry about your cats. I want a new cat but I am afraid it will bother the dogs, which will make the dogs bother the kitten.

I got a new power head about a month ago. It came with a new hose so now I have a hose in the garage also.

We had rain all day and wind. Suppose to rain all day tomorrow and snow north of us.

We were suppose to go to a neighbors party this evening but I backed out. Just did not want to get off the couch and go out in the cold weather. Did not have to ask Vern twice.

I am going to clean the wood floors tomorrow. Handyman and his son will be here tomorrow. Hopefully they will have everything done by tomorrow. But I keep adding things so it is not their fault.

Storm suppose to be out of here by late Wednesday and be saying hello to JB, Lee and Linda. Looks like snow will be there in time for Christmas.

Have a great day tomorrow. And be safe and warm. Love you all, Sharon.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon the kitten wouldn't bother the dogs like it would another cat.

I wish mine had come with a hose. My hose cost $200, electric. However, they are big spenders it does come with more wands.

Yes, you all will have the storm by Christmas. They were running alerts across the top of the TV tonight. We are suppose to get it tomorrow.

Bob has a netflix movie on so going to watch it. ttyl,

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Good Morning Gang! And how are those Western Wildcats doing with all that miserable weather you are having in California. If you get a foot of rain and in the mountains the same amount of snow..........that would put me over the edge.

I would like to live someplace where it has two seasons, Spring and Fall. Those are my times.

You are right Jen, I would never buy a powerhose for myself because I would hire someone to do that. I used to do all that stuff when I was in my 50s and 60s and even 70s but now, I do not think so.And then I would not buy it for me, I would buy it and about it because I needed it and hated to spend the money. It is all in how you look at it. You can take your hose and enjoy it. I would rather buy something that is of no use other than to make me happy. Needs and wants changes as you get into the twilight years.

And cocktail time starts at 4 and ends at 7 according to whoever made that stupid rule.
Jimmy Buffet sings that song "its 5 o'clock somewhere". Well, that is what I go by. But just for your sake I will tell you, my time is 4 P.M..........one drink and then dinner with wine if I do not have the cocktail before dinner. I never drink after dinner anymore. I used to have B&B with coffee, Irish Coffee or Coffee Brandy after dinner when I was living the social life. No longer do that.

I hate to leave you but I need to deliver some plants into town as gifts to the girls in my Chiropractors office and pick up some things at the Market. It is a beaiutiful day but they are saying we may have a white Christmas. That is o.k. as long as it melts the day after. LOL. Hugs. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

my my aren't we getting picky in our old age. No new work appliances after 70, no snow the day after Christmas, no after dinner drinking, probably goes to bed with that last bite of food on her fork.

Did all of this occur the day after your 70th birthday?

I will tell you why I can get excited about buying a new electric vacuum hose or powerhead, because I cannot get anyone to come this far to do my cleaning for me. Not like some people. We have to pay the fellow to plow our driveway double what he charges other people to come this distance. Yeah, a whole 14 miles. But you see, he has so much business right around him to keep his days filled up, why should he take the extra time to drive down here?

My sister had to pay a refrigerator repairman $200 to drive 40 miles to get to her house, before he ever started charging for his work. Guess they have enough work near their locations why should they come out here?

Anyway, that is why I buy those things for myself. Anything to make life easier.
Guess if I moved closer to the city I would be able to get people to do all that stuff for me. Wow, never thought of that.

By the way JB, a friend brought me a real big poinsettia and the leaves are turning yellow already. Now what? Am I going to kill it before Christmas? I never did like those plants, but would not kill it. What am I doing wrong?

See the rest of you, I don't think JB reads my messages so now if I ask her a question, I will see. See if she answers me.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Jeanette the wholesaler ia four star greenhouse right at $1.50 each plus shipping but they have 4 tray min. I might be interested in going in but only about a trays worth...about $40.00. if we are going to do this we either need to take it outside DG or start a (whats it called) group buy. I am going off a cataloge I got from my wholesaler. I am planning on doing about 3k of 3.5" pots mostly perrienials. I have the list already to go I am just waiting on one more thing to come through and then I will order. My delivery will be april 1st. some of the wholesaler offer a discount for a generous leed time but 4 star's was the 15th of october.

Hellen is that just picasso or "pretty much picasso"? I love the pretty much picasso with its lime skirt..... it is an option (PMP) on the list to go with the euphorbia.
another good petunia that P Allen Smith is always rattleing on in his show (has anyone seen it lately?) is supertunia vista bubblebum..really nice cover in BG pink. email me if anyone else is wanting in on specifics.
Pughbear7@hotmail.com. I don't want to cause an issue with DG. they require a 2 week leed time but i will order early as possible. I do not have the $$$$ to cover the whole order ...just an fyi for those who want to order.

Ok next post
Dave

howdy and goodnight.... I think

I noticed Thompson and morgan is selling "easy starts" - 42 prestarted plugs in a tray ready for transplant or planting which ever you would like. I just found it and thought it was kinda neat. also they are offering free shipping on orders over $50.00. I am looking at the double deckers as they are one I wanted to have but never really got a start of.

warm day today the upper 50's whooo hooo....well we got out an cleaned up some in the back yard. got all the dead and useless stuff dumped out and stacked neatly on my rack. the rack I am using was one of those 4 tier "mini" greenhouse with the zippered poly cover. I use it to hold my supplies for now.

I noticed my verbenea have made it through the real cold spells...funny how its suposed to be an annual. I know some can be perienial but i did not know which ones besides homstead were.

well time to swich water and shower for the night.

have a good evening everyone
Dave

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh Dave I did not know if it was Picasso or Pretty much. The BBG Super looks nice too but the color is more subdued that i usually like here, because the desert has so much brown. I want to have some Window boxes or a big long one under my windows that run across the front of my house and that would be a nice mix.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Dawn, we moved. See above.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

[quote="Jnette"]Peg, it's a Euphorbia. Tiny white flowers on nice greenery I use it for fillers in my containers. But that's a lot of plants. I couldn't find a place to ask the seller if they would plant them.

on ebay its tough to find the ask the seller a question. I know because I always have a question of some sort...;)

if its on the growers web page you would need to call the broker and ask the question throught them. I don't know if the growers office people will field questions on small orders. Thats why I sugested a co-op or an off DG between friends order. Please let em know what you find out
