foxtail fern winter care

Columbus, GA

Hello...

I have a beautiful foxtail fern in a very large pot that is outdoors. I love this plant and want to be sure that I take proper care of it during the winter....Should I take my plant inside during the winter (it is SO heavy!) or would it be alright to cover it with plastic when there is freezing weather?
Also, will the plant be okay outside if the temperature is cold but still not freezing (like 40 degrees)?
Thank you so much for your wonderful advise and tips!

They're only hardy to zone 9 and I suspect you're in 8, so the safest thing would be to bring it in for the winter. But if you really can't move it or if you're willing to experiment a bit, you might try covering it with burlap or something similar (not plastic) on cold nights and see if that works. I don't know for sure one way or the other whether the burlap would be enough--I suspect most frosty nights that would be just fine, but if you get some super cold temperatures it may not be enough. People sometimes also string Christmas lights around plants that aren't quite hardy and turn those on when it's cold out and the little bit of heat from the lights is enough to save things. Again if the temps are super cold it might not be enough but it's worth trying and should be enough on nights that aren't too cold. It'll be fine with temps that are cold but not freezing so no need to protect it then.
