Ponytail Palm Tree

Edmonton, Canada

I've got this tree that is about 6ft tall and about 23inches at the base(bulb diameter). I was just curious to know, how old this tree is? I've been told that it is over 80yrs old. Could this be true?

mine is over 6 ft tall and only 20 years old

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

ours is 10' tall and only 7 years old... these plants grow at very different rates depending upon what care they get, if they are in a pot, if they are outdoors, if they get a lot of water, if they are in sun or shade. Etc. I would say your plant could be 80 years old if it was really treated sparingly... no water ever, and kept crammed in a tiny pot for most of its life. We have some Beaucarneas that are 50 years old outdoors here in southern California that have bases over 15' across, and are 20' tall (they don't get a whole lot taller than that, no matter how old they are).

Mine has been neglected and in a pot for around 20 years and is about 30" tall. Soon to be planted in the yard.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

I've had mine for 36 years and is over 7' tall. I keep it outside in the summer. When we brought it in last month I noticed it burst the big ceramic pot it's been in for 10 years. Now it's in an even bigger, heavier pot and has a stand under it with wheels. I don't think I will be able to cart it outside anymore for it's summer spot. It took both of us and a dolly to get it up the porch steps and back into the house. I don't think it's going to get much taller. It has several good sized offshoots growing on the base now. It's really kind of funny looking, but it's an old friend.

My Partner planted 2 seeds 20 or so yrs. ago. I repotted them into 3 progressively larger pots for about ten yrs. In the last 10 yrs. repotted both into 22" 12" deep perm. homes. They were getting too heavy to pick up to bring in for winter. Last year I had back pain so sadly they froze .But after cutting them almost to the base giving them half sun this summer they are back. Not tall but they put out side sprouts and the foliage is thick and bushy I think I like them just as well this way. They have been inside about 2 weeks now. Thanks to a good doc.JIMT.
