Colder today than anytime this year. I did snap a few pix, though.
Here is a female Cardinal getting ready to fly down to a feeder.
Daily Bird Pics Vol 358
Nice shots everyone!! Hack your female Cardinal shot looks great!
You could start as simple as a free program like Picasa.
You could also buy photo software at a later date when you want something more involved.
I use Picasa, it has been enough for me...plus free.
BOKEH...the closer you are to your subject the more blurred the background gets...only your subject or what is directly connected to your subject ( say a bare branch) will be in focus also capturing more detail in your subject/aka bird, squirrel etc.
Nice ones syndicate!
Wonderful shots Lily, teddy and Hack!
***Linthicum will be starting the new thread later****
It seems to me that the sparrows will eat anything. I did not think they liked Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, but they do. Will try to get some more shots if it warms up a little right now it feels like 10 degrees out there, so no pictures for awhile, unless I get lucky and get them out the door.
Hackster, I have only seen a male Cardinal once this winter, could the sparrows be scaring them off? Have seen some Juncos, and of course as I said before, the ever present nuthatch. But no Cardinals, is there some special seed that only they like, or is it just my location?
Does anyone think that if I throw some Sunfloewer Seeds on the ground I could entice more Cardinals to my feeder? I read that they like them, and I would like to see another one this winter, they are so pretty with that bright red color! The females are pretty too. Any info would be helpful.
As was mentioned, Black Oil Sunflower seeds are the favorite of Northern Cardinals. I don't think it will improve the chance to attract the Cardinal by putting the seed on the ground but I do know this. Squirrels just love sunflower seeds. Generally you can't expect miracles overnight. Actually, it may take a month or two. When snow is on the ground your chances will most likely increase.

Great pictures everyone. Hack, I really like that male cardinal picture. Just beautiful. Looks like a perfect shot for a greeting card.
Cardinals do feed on the ground. Difficult for them to get onto our 'basket' feeder. If you have a shelf feeder it should not be a problem.

May try to make a shelf feeder, although don't know if hubby will go along with it, already have the main feeder, a suet cake holder, and a shelf on the tree. He might say ENOUGH! But he has been pretty patient, he even helps me fill the feeder, and puts food on the shelf for the squirrels. I filled the main feeder this morning until I could not get another seed in it, and it is already more than half empty and it is just afternoon. Those sparrows are EVERYWHERE, on the tree, in the street, on the feeder. Its funny when they all take off, then start coming back.
Hi kc8, Good to see your Red-bellied. We are on a new thread now so why don't you repost the photo there.
