I have Candy Wind (dwarf Hibiscus), which did well all summer. How can I keep them over the winter? Can I cut them all the way down to the ground and cover them with pine straw to protect them? I will appreciate your advice as to how to keep them. Not sure which zone I am in, but, I live in the southern part of SC.
Thank you.
Dwarf Hibiscus
Many tropical hibiscus are grafted, so unless you know for a fact that yours isn't I wouldn't try the cutting it all the way down and mulching approach--if it is grafted and you do that then you'll be left with the rootstock plant which won't be nearly as pretty as Candy Wind. If you're right on the coast, then you may be in zone 9 and the hibiscus would have a chance of surviving outside unless you have a bad winter, but if you want to be safe I'd probably bring it inside. I always keep my hibiscus in a greenhouse for the winter--even though most winters they'd survive outside, they lose all their leaves and are REALLY slow to get going again in the spring, but when I keep them warm over the winter some of them keep blooming right through the winter, and the others are ready to go as soon as the weather gets warm.
