I have moved from Calif. to Idaho.....

Council, ID(Zone 5a)

I am wondering if there is anyone who can give me tips on keeping epiphylliums safe in the cold weather of Idaho. They do just fine in Council during the Spring and Summer, but now I have the problem of keeping them healthy throughout the winter. Can bringing them inside help or hinder? Sure would appreciate any input.

You definitely need to bring them inside--they have no chance of surviving your winter outdoors. Many people keep them as houseplants year-round so they shouldn't have any trouble surviving the winter indoors. I'd try to keep them in a window that's facing the same direction as whatever location you had them outside, make sure you keep them watered (but not too much--they won't go through water as quickly in the winter as they do in the warmer months), and make sure that you don't have a cold draft on them or a heating vent blowing directly on them.

Boy, I have to get me some of those. Beautiful!

Hi ecrane....thanks so much for your advice. As you know, one could grow a wooden chair leg in Ca. and I am learning all over again here in Idaho. Other than growing perrenials in my yard, I zero in to succulents, houseplants and epies. I am in the stage of "let's see what will live" and push the zones. Thanks again for caring and I would welcome any tips you may think of.

Hi shune.....really, epies are gorgeous! They are really carefree and you tend to ignore them. In Ca. I had them hanging in avocado trees and their blooms are spectacular. Hope I can keep them happy here in cold country.
