Hello everyone! This is my first post to the forum; I am a media specialist from SC trying to spruce my library up with some growing, living, green things that my students desperately need more exposure to. I have many plants, but my Diffenbachia is not doing so well!
I bought it from Lowes as a tiny little 4" plant in a small plastic starter pot. I tended it for a few months and it really blew up with big, broad, striped leaves. I thought it needed a repotting and I didn't know about overpotting at the time, so I put it into a vessel that was way too big. Over the next few months the leaves turn an even yellow and I pinched them off as they did.
It shrank, shriveled, the leaves turned a bit brown, and the leaves curled. I had to strip off a few limp, slimy parts. I repotted it into a smaller pot and just sort of let it do its thing for awhile. It stayed stunted and a bit weak looking, but it did grow some new tender gren growth. Hoping to encourage this growth, I waited until it was quite dry and light feeling and I soaked it thoroughly. I'm waiting to see what happens. Right now the soil seems too moist so I poked some holes with a pencil and let it sit in the sunshine for a bit.
I really want to get this guy back to thriving. What do I need to do? Please give suggestions on light, water, etc. It is living in a rather dry, warm library right now but I can get it anywhere if it will help!
PS - I do know the numbing quality of the "Dumb Cane," but I keep it well out of reach of my students, who probably would not eat a salad if I paid them anyway!
Diffenbachia in dire straits! Now looks like bamboo!
The plant looks like Aglaonema modestum.
Transplant it to a larger pot and fertilize it, and it should be okay.
i have a diffenbachia that is new. It is about a foot tall but only has two large leaves. How can i get it to grow more leaves?
Well I can't give advice on how to grow a pretty Dieffenbachia (see picture below), but I have had mine for about 7 years and it still alive (about all I can say about it I guess...)
I don't repot mine all too often, every few years or so. It receives low light for the most part as it is in my bedroom. I let the soil get fairly dry before watering, and then I water it moderately. I don't really soak any of my plants as I have heard that it is always better to err on the dry side because of possible root rot. I fertilize every three months or so (really, I fertilize when I remember to, but I am getting better!). I also tried fertilizer spikes for a while and they also seemed fine for the plant.
If just bottom leaves are yellowing I think that is pretty normal. I just pick mine off. I know that you can also cut the cane to encourage branching if you don't like the bamboo stalk-like appearance. For some reason I have become too attached to my goofy plant to try this, although it did finally send out a new shoot by itself right from the bottom of the cane this year.
I have found it to be a fairly low maintenance plant. Maybe you just need to neglect yours a little bit more? Sorry I don't have any concrete answers, I am definitely not an expert but I just wanted to share what little experience I do have with the plant.
