CyclamenHelp! Did I kill it?!

Bayville, NJ

I received a beautiful cyclamen as a gift a week ago. The giver said it should be kept moist and in a sunny window. I did both and for several days it was just beautiful, blooming like crazy. I came back after the weekend and it looked like this--wilted!! When I pull off the wilted leaves and buds, the stems are very wet. Did I over-water? More important, can it be saved?!

[It was a good luck gift on the opening of my new bookstore... I hope this is not an omen. ;-) ]

It's easier to run a books store than to keep Cyclamen going if you're not REALLY into plants. They are meant to be a gift plant, I think. You know, set them out while they are beautiful and send them to the compost pile after that. Yours is not in that bad of shape and I think it can be revived. They prefer cool, humid conditions. Probably not what you would find in a store, if that's where you have it. But, if you provide the other optimal growing conditions, it should still look good for awhile. For starters, they need a good amount of water, but can't be left in sitting water. Let it dry a bit between thorough waterings and always remove standing water after the plant has taken up all it can. Give it bright light and keep it out of drafts (or under heating vents). If the stems seem wet, you are overwatering. Let it get dry about an inch down, then water. Feed half strength every 2 -3 weeks with any plant food you have. Keep it in an area that it doesn't keep getting bumped. The stems are delicate and if they get bent, you will certainly lose that leaf. And above all else, remember.......if it doesn't make it, it's NOT an omen (but I would suggest sticking with books and not plants),
