cleaning seeds, Chinese Forget Me Not

This is the first year I've collected seed from this plant. Info. from this site says that seed can be successfully stored if properly cleaned. Is the hard, four sectioned shell actually four seperate seeds, or is the seed enclosed in the middle of this sectional covering? I've torn several of these apart and there is a dark center. But more often than not it seems that I destroy it when trying to remove it from the outer sections. Thanks for your help.
