Growing Garlic Indoors Problem

Halifax, Canada

Hi there,

I planted a garlic bulb in September and placed it on a sunny window sill. The soil had drainage; I kept it watered frequently; and I ensured it got lots of direct sunlight. Foliage started to sprout very quickly (less than one week) and the sprouts grew about a foot tall. They were very thin shoots but the were green until about 2 weeks ago. They started to turn brown and die off and I noticed tons of tiny white/grey bugs (1mm in length) in the soil. Now the sprouts have turned completely brown. I peeked at the bulb and it is still very small - scarcely bigger than when first planted it.

Does anyone know what I should do?

I would really appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. I'm stumped as to what to do.

Thanks

I have never grown garlic indoors. But it sounds like your garlic plant was eaten by those bugs you mentioned. Try planting your garlic outdoors.

ninniku, sounds like you may have garlic maggots/larvae. If your garlic had eggs in it then they would hatch out in the environment you have going.
Sorry to disappoint you.

By the way, garlic needs a cold period to get it to bulb up nicely, which is probably why you had top growth but very little root and bulb growth.
