Your iris look quite a bit like daylilies to me both above and below ground. What do the flowers look like?

Steve, maybe that is what is wrong. I think you are right. Would love to see a flower from them.

thanks, guys! They are definitely iris; I can't show one cuz they finish blooming in June here. They are the slender bright purple kind, not bearded.

Tubers, I'm not really seeing, which is what worries me. I wonder if because they are so old, the tubers are way way down...but the roots and buds at the surface are so thick!

I posted on your first thread also, but I think you have Japanese or Siberian Iris.
They don't have tubers/rhizomes, they have roots. Details on your first thread... :o)
