when to plant onion seeds

Pulaski, GA

I got a free packet of onion seeds in the mail. When should they be planted in south Georgia (zone 9?) Should I start seedlings in pots or direct sow? I have never grown onions at all.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Depends on what type of onion seeds you have. In middle to south Georgia, short day varieties are grown and are usually sown in October. Might be worth your while to drive to one of the onion farms and ask a few questions. Tattnall county is not very far and a major producer of Vidalia onions.

The seed package says "Hybrid Onion, Yellow storage Bridger F1Treated" Does that tell you what kind it is?

Yes Bridger is a long day onion, normally harvested in August. They do not do well in the south, because our summers are too hot. Best bet is to sow them in the fall here and harvest for spring (green) onions. rarely will they size up in the south.
