Cardoon or Cardoni

Pittsburgh, PA

I recently was discussion gardening with a friend who was trying to find out about what his Italian Father called "Cardoni". I saw a PBS cooking show a week or so ago (Maryann Esposito) and she was cooking what she called Cardoon .. Same vegetable .. Also called "Italian Artichoke" or "Weed Artichoke".

Does anyone know where to buy seeds or starter plants for this veggie?.. Any tips or planting hints?

Buenos Aires, Argentina

I have tons of seeds if you're interested... just dmail me.
The local variety is a spiny one, I'm aware that there exist some varieties that have no spines.
If you take care of cardoon like you would do with celery you will get tall plants (up to 2 meters or 7 feet)... it's a weed, very hardy, not demanding at all.

You can eat the inner whiter stems raw or use them in soups, stews and stuffings. It's become a weed down here so there is really no need to grow it, although it's being grown a lot lately for biodiesel production...
