any tips on growing roses from seeds?
roses from seed
Unless you are growing species roses from seed, don't expect the results to be the same as the parent plant.
Never even heard of roses from seed
Fresh Cherokee Rose seeds germinate easily right off the bush and grow like a weed. Maybe not that fast. 27 out of the 40 potted seeds germinated from hips collected in January and sown 20 to a 32 oz Sonic stryo drink cup within a day or so. I used the lid from the Sonic cup to keep the humidity high in the cup. 25 plants ended up living after the fat finger pick and stick from Sonic styro to a plain white16 oz stryo cup. The Cherokee Rose comes true from seed.
I have germinated a few seeds from a New Dawn climber but I managed to promote them to compost duty soon after. The New Dawn doesn't make very good hips and makes very few seeds at my place. It does make great thorns.
That is my rose seed stories and I am sticking to them.
Cherokee rose is Rosa laevigata, a "species rose", or in other words, a rose species as opposed to a hybrid (funny how the words get interchanged), so it makes sense that it comes true from seed.
