Do flower seeds have to be refridgerated ?

Shirley, IN

This is my first year to harvest my own seeds from my flowers. do they need to be refridgerated? and do all flowers produce seeds , I cant seem to locate the seed pods on my impatients or double petunias.

Some seeds need to be refrigerated but others don't. If you can post a list of the seeds you're planning to start, someone can probably advise you on which ones need it.

As far as forming seeds--there are some hybrids that are sterile and won't make seeds so that may be the case with your impatiens and petunias. Or if you deadhead to keep your plants blooming longer that'll keep them blooming but prevent them from making seeds.

the seeds I plan to start are petunias , vinca , and dianthus .

I've started dianthus from seed with no problem. Can't say about the others, I'm really not a seed person.

I refrigerate all my seeds.

You can take impatiens cuttings if there are no seed pods.

I asked Parks or Burpee one of them and received an answer (I did not do this,I even asked them WT?, are you pulling my leg?) This is paraphrased Put your seed pkts. in a container with a tightly fitting Cover. But first put the pkts.in a ziplock and seal the ziplock. Cover the sealed pkts. with white sugar. seal the container and keep seeds in the fridge untill you are ready to start them. Most of the seed pkts. told if they needed to be kept in the fridge & for how many weeks. I just put them all in a ziplock and put them in a bottom drawer where I keep my flour, cornmeal and the like. From what I've read giving them a few weeks of cold mimics the cold they would normaly get outside and does give them an edge. My Mimulus paks. said keep in fridge for several weeks to aide germenation Sat. will be 8 weeks. I kept my coreopsis and cosmos from my plants and put them in the fridge. I'll start them sat. too. Can't hurt.JIMT.

A long time ago they used to put seeds in jars with moth balls so weevils would not eat them up. Now I just refrigerate and freeze my seed that I save. Bought seed go into the refrig until they can be planted. I have some bean seed which I have had for years and they are still viable. Every few years I plant a few so I can keep the seed going.
