You know, I haven't noticed an odor on the spray that I've got. I try not to spray except when I have to, and have really only used it on a few plants.
As for the tight centers - they have gotten better since I removed one of the shelves, and spaced the shelves further apart. It will take some time for everything to look perfect, but things are on their way.
Giving Thanks for November Blooms!
I think you are right, Lynn. I am looking for a Yoki now. I think the vendor mislabeled that one. It has a beautiful bloom though, Jan :) All of these pics being posted are wonderful bringing lots of sunshine in for November :)))))
Nichole, Lynn, just a thought here....I was told by a vendor that is very trustworthy that the problems you two are describing could possibly be from not maintaining consistent care for that plant. I was having that problem and no bugs. I admit, I would sometimes let them dry out too much and yo yo back and forth or could be from too much light and even temperature. You will know that this is the case if your A.V. will produce new growth in the crown after consistent watering. In my case, constant moisture from wicking instead of letting the darn water level get too low and not notice lol. Yes, I was a BAD MOMMA!!! Again, this is just a thought and may not be your case at all.
Connie
It could very well be my problem LOL.
Thanks Sally -- definitely better. I do NOT make a good patient!
Lynn and Connie thanks for your opinions. I was kind of afraid that might be the case. I've gotten used to blooms not "quite" looking like vendor pictures, but this one was a bit too different for my comfort. Guess I'll have to track her down and find out if she's got the real thing still. I'm not familiar with yokohama and have been looking for a picture of it (or a description). Any ideas of where I might find one? Whatever it is, I do think it's pretty neat even if it's not so neat that I got the wrong one.
I agree with Lynn that Safer soap has an odor (one that I really don't like, so maybe that's why I notice). It's one of the reasons I use just dish soap and water whenever I can get away with it. Between that, rubbing alcohol to spray on succulents, cinnamon and milk for fungus and the ever present yellow sticky traps, I haven't had any problems get out of hand for a while. Knock on wood. But I live in mortal fear of a mite attack. A couple years ago, I lost a beautiful, large fruit and blossom laden calamondin orange tree that I'd pampered for many many years to the miserable little beasts. They are tough, particularly in the North in winter. Does the safer spray work on them? Is that what most of you use?
Nichole -- that leaf is really interesting. From what I can remember from developmental genetics, I think this sort of thing can happen (at least in humans and animals) when there's a mutation very, very early in development (like at the two cell level). The symmetry in the coloring makes me wonder about this. But I don't know the first thing about how violets develop, so I'm mainly just guessing. But I bet someone that knows a lot about violet genetics would be interested in that leaf.
Jan,
I don't have a picture of Yokohama, but here is a description from FC.

Now that I found that I know it is not your plant either....darn.
Connie - I don't doubt that it could be an inconsistent watering issue as well.

Darn it, NIchole :( I know you put it up the other day but I just can't remember where????? It will be in the last place you look...PROMISE!!!
Yes, and I'll find it AFTER I don't need it anymore . . . . grrrrrr!!!!!!

Lynn
It's probably sitting right next to my little notebook, with all the notes I took on which leaves to cut and put in baggies tonite . . .
Ok, found the notebook . . . guess I'll have to go with baggies and tape on the bigger plants.
Good luck at the show Nicole! Let us know how it goes asap!
Hi everyone! I've been lurking on the forum the past couple of days and I'm really enjoying all of your lovely blooms! I keep saying I NOT going to set up light stands again but if I keep looking at all these beauties I might just have to move stuff around in the house to set up just ONE stand! ☺
I don't have many Gesneriad's anymore. I threw out my one and only AV yesterday because it was in a terrarium and growing all wonky and looked terrible. I guess I shouldn't have left it in there without any grooming for the past two years!! I have a couple of Chirita's and just got three little plants in the mail a week ago from the Violet Barn (Petrocosmea HT2 and a couple of Episcias. They are so tiny, I forgot how small the plants are that Rob ships. Now I just need to remember to take care of them so maybe they will grow up nice and pretty!
This is Chirita tamiana that I received in a trade here a few years ago. This has been one of my favorite gessie's ... so easy, I don't pay much attention to it at all and yet it survives in my household!
beautiful blooms girls!
Hi Miss Lin,how are you? You have to stop lurking and jump right in with us:) C.tamiana was a favorite of mine to but I lost it.Anyone have any seed?
Mother nature is being to cruel to me.My 2 big brugs(7-8 feet tall) are full of flower buds, getting ready to bloom in a day or two and were getting a early cold front and it's going to freeze every night till tuesday.Yesterday I counted 52 buds on one side of my monster tree.Waaaaaaaaa.
This was about 2 monthes ago
Hi ya Jan! Oooh, sorry to hear that it's going to be so cold there! Those Brugs are outstanding ... they won't die will they? We are having a bit of a cool down here. Last week we were above normal for high's with temps in the upper 80's and it only got up to 64º today! Tonight it's supposed to drop to 42º! I haven't thought about bringing any plants inside so I hope my orchids and everything else out on the deck will be okay. It should be fine though because usually the coldest temp is right before sunrise and then things warm up quickly!
Hi Nichole! Ooooh ... I don't know who Steven is but that has to be the Most Beautiful AV I've ever seen! Wow! I envy folks with the patience to grow like that!
... not a Gessie but an Orchid I found blooming this morning:
Hi, Lin! Steven is the Steven from Steven's Plant Shop. He advertises in the AVSA magazine, and is a member of our club here in San Antonio. He was just so thrilled to have gotten this award!
He really deserved an award for that big beautiful AV, it really is amazing! Does Steven have a website for his plant shop or is it just a local place?
Steven . . . . doesn't do internet . . . yet. I will see tomorrow if he has an updated plant list that I could put in a .pdf or something . . .
WOW that av is beautiful !!!!!! I want It !! Bur then again i want them alll!!
That's a beauty! What is that plant in the pot next to it?
YAY!!! More pics to look at. That strep is gorgeous!! Lin, so is yours. You've got the touch
Nice Brugs, Jan! I have always wanted to try to grow one and I finally have my chance. I am getting cuttings sent to me, just hope I can root and grow them.
Connie
Love, love love that noid strep!
What gorgeous blooms everyone!! Steven's Tommie Lou is awesome.
stupid question - wasn't "tommy Lou" the first variagted AV or??? Helene
I think it was Helene.
Lynn
Thanks ladies I love those brugs. There nothing but frozen mess after the freeze, now the weathers going back to mid 70's/50's go figure.Lin they regrow next spring.Anyone tha
Good for you getting some cuttings Connie.I've had good luck rooting them in water or just stuck in the dirt.Watch for spider mites over the winter!
Jan
Jan, mine were the same, loaded with blooms, now just mush. This year wasn't a good year for them. But I had hubby move some in so that I can have a head start next year.
Spider Mites??? I will definately keep these away from my gessies! Can I gently treat them with something as a precaution when they get here? Neem oil with a little Dawn dish soap diluted with water? 3 in 1 spray?
Connie
The plant next to my NoId strep is a d. Aliciae Sundew.
tommyr2006: You should upload a pic of your Drosera to PF: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/86448/
I've never grown a Sundew but they sure are interesting plants! http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=drosera+aliciae&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=UT_YTJydMsX6lwf6v7j-CA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCAQsAQwAA&biw=1280&bih=701
It's very intriguing.
Knew it looked familiar--always wanted to try one.
