Dave:
I can't answer your question but I have eggplant that went squirrely this year also. It was planted in May and hasn't born any fruit until now?
Don't ask me why; the plants are very healthly and large. I dont know if the fruit will mature before frost.
Strange year for Eggplant.
Paul
paul that was cause by your extreamly dry year we get that here on dry years but never ran into the color thing before
i guess i'll pick one and see how it taste
paulgrow ... another possible cause for fruit bearing plants not to produce fruit, could be u do not have enough insects [i.e. butterflies & bees] to help pollinate the flowers. i have planted japanese eggplant this year & have ample supply of fruits. i have planted marigold around the veggie garden to help attract insect to help me pollinate all the fruit bearing veggies in my yard.
dave719... i have not planted black beauty eggplant. from little that i know the fruit u got will eventually turn to dark color as the fruit matures. once it turned dark in color and shiny it should be ready. basing on japanese eggplants i grow, i pick them off the mother plants when the fruit is shiny and firm. once color becomes dull in color, it meant the fruit has matured and bore seeds inside which is inedible cause of the bitterness. dull fruits i set aside to dry for next year's growth. hope that help some ;).
ma vie rosé
what a bizarre situation -- i have never had eggplants come out any color other than that which they are supposed to be ... they are dark purple when they are little tiny things and dark purple when they're big and strapping ... except of course the bicolors which are paler purple and white striped. here in massachusetts it was a bang up year for eggplants ... all my plants did really well. three kinds: japanese, regular and bicolor ... mmm mmm good!
